Default Controller replacement

When you replace a controller, does it have to be the same as the original that came with the cart or is there scope to use alternatives. If yes, what guidelines would I follow. i.e. do amps have to be the same, etc.
My cart is ds 1997 Series. Has anyone used the "Curtis" brand from China?
Any Aussies know the best place to buy controllers in Australia or can we save money by purchasing from the US. (Except for the dollar being low at the moment)

amps do not have to be the same you can go bigger . I have a 2000 series cart and removed the Curtis 225 amp and replace it with a 700 amp GE. don't know where to buy in Australia but a good place to start is with ScottyB

Thank you Swan - I have shipped several controller packages to AUS. Golf carts use a few different types of drive systems. You simply identify your drive system. Choose a controller size to deliver the amperage you need for your application ( more amps = more torque)
