Default Batteries

I need to buy new batteries for my 2006 precident cart. I have thought about switching to 4 US 12 volt batteries. I was told by a dealer that if the cart came with trojans from club car I need to stay with trojans due to the computer being trojan specific. He said that the US batteries are different and that the computer might not let them charge properly or could over charge them. Has anyone heard of this and if so is he right?

No... he's pulling your leg for a sale!
As long as they're "golf car" batteries, you can use whatever brand you like!

I'd find a new dealer.

Sadly, sometimes it's not that easy...
I only have one reputable CC dealer within a 150 mile radius... fortunately for me, (and him) he's never lied to me like that!

Sorry to disagree but your dealer is correct in that the algorithim on the original OBC does specify Trojan, Crown and JCI batteries. The US battery OBC was a different part #. Having said that, NONE of the OBC's ever charged correctly and if memory serves the newer replacement OBC's work just as well(or poorly) regardless of which batteries are used.

I don't know if it matters but I do not have an on board charger.

With that said, all cart batteries will charge and work. It is just the way the OBC charges will not be EXACTLY what the manufacturer specifies. And the differences are slight....starting amperage (17amp, 14.5amp, 14amp), duration (DVDT or + 10% ), ending amperage (3amp, 4 amp, 4.5 amp)....

Just to make sure we are all singing off the same page, OBC is on board computer not on board charger.

Can any lead acid batts of correct voltage and AH range be used? Yes.
Is the charge profile optimized for a specific brand battery, and optimal battery life and performance? YES.
You can do it, but a US battery OBC may feel "a little hot" to a Trojan battery, US batteries like a little higher finish voltage than a Trojan battery.
What they told you was not Total BS.
