Watering batteries
How high above the plates is the water supost to be? I've heard of people say 1/4 inch to 1 inch. What are most if you doing ? I have the quick connect watering system but I don't like it.

. . . 1/4" over plates . . . too much will result in "boiling over" as batteries gas during charge cycle . . .

I just like to visually check the levels. I have been keeping them just over plates about 1/4-1/2 just wondering what others are doing.

It's definitely 1/4" and not up to 1". Anything over 1/4" will boil out while charging...

You can't really check the water level, other than removing the caps. And some cells are lower than others when I have used it. When batteries cost a grand to replace I want piece of mind and not a scrap shoot.

It would be a great idea if the battery's had a clear top to visually see the water level.

I'm going to get back on my soapbox again. If you do a search on this forum, you will find that watering systems have been proven to be dangerous. All the hydrogen gas in all the batteries is manifolded together through the tubing in the watering system. If one of the batteries arcs inside due to internal failure (trust me it happens), ALL of your batteries can possibly explode. My advice is to cut the tubes at each battery or remove the system entirely and replace with regular battery caps. The explosions I described are rare but----------! Dave |
