Default 2008 electric club car prec.

a friend of mine has a 2008 club car precedent. he has 3 good batts and 1 bad. he wants to hook up a deep cycle batt to it to see if it will run!! is this a good or bad idea? also, should he hook the charger up to the cart to charge the remaining 3 batts with the deep cycle hooke up to the cart? can this damage the controller. I have begged him not to do it!! I have him convinced not to do it. but, I am afraid he will hook it up later in the day!! Thanks!!!

Golf cart batteries are deep cycle. Is that what he has?

Also, you say you want to do this, to see if the cart will run? Do you mean just to see if the cart will move, or are you wanting to drive it a ways?

He can charge the 3 good and one "rogue" batteries with an automotive type charger. Will take longer - but the OBC will not be part of that excercise - then he can test drive, knowing the non-golf-cart battery is the weak link, so it will fold first.

We hooked up the cart with the deep cycle battery. It ran but had hardly any power. I'm assuming it was because the deep cycle batt did not have near the AH rating as the remaining 3. Would it be ok to hook up the charger to the cart?? Should I charge the 3 reg cart batteries individually?

How old are the 3 good batteries? If they are over three and a half years I'd consider replacement, maybe convert to 6 8v batteries because 4 12's don't nearly last as long as the 8's.

I have an 08 with 12's no way would I buy another 12v. they just don't last as long ans not go as far on a charge.

We have talked about changing to the 6 8 volts however, the price on the battery tray is hard to swallow. I agree with you tho. The 6 batts are way better on run time. I have 6 6 volts in my ezgo. And I'm going to seven and upgrade to 42.

In 2008, Club Car was changing some things around. If the battery tub has a plastic wall dividing the tray into 2 sections, the cart is an early 2008 and will require some modification to battery tub for conversion. I recommend checking out this thread:Precedent Battery Tub Conversion
Early 2008 tub:

If the battery tub doesn't have the plastic divider and the TOW/RUN switch is on the back wall of the battery box, you have a 2008.5 model year and can convert to 6 x 8v batteries without any modifications to the tub itself. Check this thread out: Precedent Conversion From 12v to 8v
2008.5 and up tub:

ok, My buddy went and bought another battery. In the meantime I have charged all 3 remaining batteries individually. batt 1 had 12.62 v Batt 2 had 12.48 and batt 3 had 12.79 I hooked the all up and got a reading of 51.7 Then I plugged the charger into the cart. I will wait til charger stops then check pack after 12 hrs rest!! what should it read??

According to the chart posted in THIS STICKY at least 50.5 volts after they have sat off-charge for about 12 hours.

The new battery will have a shorter life because its being teamed with 3 other older batteries. Hard to say how much shorter; depending on the relative health of the remaining three.
