Amp draw???
How can I measure the current draw on my golf cart?
I am using 8 x 215ah 6v lead acid batteries and 4 gauge wires all of which weigh in at about 650 pounds. I have a Plum Quick purple motor that was 36v, and reworked to perform well on 48v. The cart is a club car DS with long travel suspension lift kit, 23" radial tires, Rhox 12" rims, heavy duty rear springs/lift, rear seat (steel). Total, I believe the cart is about 1,000 pounds. New front hubs/bearings/spindles, complete new rear end with royal purple synthetic oil in the gears, brakes properly adjusted. Everything rolls smooth. I wonder how much the cart pulls from the batteries in short bursts as well as cruising at full speed (23mph flat and level). I am toying with the idea of using lithium batteries of some sort and need to know the demands the batteries might see. Switching from lead acid to lithium products could potentially shave 300 to 500 pounds off of this golf cart. This would reduce the demand on the power system. Can anyone tell me what a cart like might would typically draw from lead acid batteries and also how to measure the current myself? What tools? |

Re: Amp draw???
I'm using an all tax controllers, but it has been several since it was installed and access is a real pita. It is either a 300a or 400 A controller. The controller has never been unhappy, but I did get the forward and reverse switch very hot one time dragging a grate to level a baseball diamond. Won't ever do that stunt again.

Ohhh, that sounds good. I'll have to research that option and find some sucker to hold the laptop and ride shotgun while I put the cart through its paces.
Off to research... I have an AXE 4844 400A controller. |

Re: Amp draw???
How about using a clamp on amp meter. You would have to temp remove front seat and make a temp half seat so you could sit and watch the meter while you drive. If you want calculated values. The max would be the max out of your controller and the min would be the hp of your motor times 746watts. So a 3.3hp CC motor times 746 would be about 2500 watts. That equates to 50amps when your at cruising speed. A little extra info. Your battery pack has 11KwH's of storage. So theoretically you could run your cart for about 4 hrs straight with a full charge down to zero, But everybody knows you only want to discharge to 50% SOC

Re: Amp draw???
The instructions from all trax only show the unit being programmed on the bench using a power supply. Can I program and monitor in real time while driving the cart with the controller fully connected and in use?

Software installed. Will have to find the wires to make necessary connections and some nicer weather.
