Default Negative reading on battery?

My batteries are just a couple of weeks old. Today I tested them with my volt meter for the first time. Fresh off the charger I had about 7.5 volts on each battery except for one. On that one I had a -5.6 reading. I am assuming this means that battery has reversed polarity so does that mean I should take it back and warranty it? What could have caused this to happen? Thanks for the help as always

If the batteries have be performing as they should, you probably have developed a bad cell in the battery that checked negative. If they have not been performing correct, you might have a battery wired in backward.

Or you test terminals were on the wrong polarity posts. Red on neg will read minus.

Ok I will have to check them out. I am guessing I wires that one backwards because I am actually getting pretty poor performance out of them. About 7 mph is top speed it's an 82 36 volt resistor cart.

Yes Scottyb I checked them with the test leads correctly and double checked then checked with them backwards and it was the same reading but positive with the leads backwards on the battery.

Ok I just went out and looked, about an hour after unplugging I'm getting 6.06 on all batteries except for the one that was wired in backwards /: is this a full charge? On the other 5 batteries or should I have more? Water levels look good. What can I do about the one I reversed? Will hooking it up correct fix it? Thanks again.

6.06 is about 50% charge. 6.37 is 100%. They all should come up good with them hooked up correctly. The one was fighting so to speak to keep them from charging. I would charge the neg one by its self first if it Were me.

Charge the living DS out of it solo... and hope for the best. It may be okay if it didn't take too long to find.

If you monitor temp you can charge it with 12v at 2amps...... but you must keep battery temp under 90 degrees.

If you wire it in backwards it will reverse charge - but it probably won't produce normal performance. If it doesn't come around when you forward charge it you will have to replace it.

Thanks for the input fellas I'm gonna pull it out when I get home and throw my trickle charger on it at 2amps and see what happens. How do I go about monitoring the temp of the battery tho. Once I get this kink worked out I'm guessing that will solve my top speed issue and hopefully allow the other batteries to take a full charge. As far as the 6.37 volt reading how long after taking them off the charge should I look for that reading? Thanks again everyone.
