1985 Club Car DS electric mods
Need some input. Purchased a 85 club car ds electric (36volt) and want to do a complete upgrade to include:
Lift Tires ( largest i can get) Seats Lights ( currently has non) Radio Everything Etc Question? Do I need to upgrade factory (1985) 36 volt motor to 48 volts to support tires and lift? Did notice a significant decrease in speed going up hills in not so hilly neighborhood? If anyone is near augusta/atlanta/south carolina area let me know. JP |

Re: 1985 Club Car DS electric mods
Start with research. Read all the posts you can and get familiar with the issues and technology before you do anything.
You have a resistor cart with resistor coils and 5 solenoids behind batteries? This cart has limitations, so we will need to know... Is this going to be a serious off-road cart, or just a neighborhood cruiser? Determine that (truthfully), then some advice can be given. You may be better starting with a 48 volt cart looking at the laundry list of upgrades. Does it run? How old are the batteries? Does the charger work? Answer to your question: A 48V motor in a 36V cart will be SLOWER than your stock 36V motor. Welcome to BGW! |

Welcome to BGW! Let's dive in, shall we?
First up: How much do you want to spend? You're going to need to upgrade your drive system from the old resistor type to a solid state type to turn those large tires you wanna put on. This is gonna include: 48 volts worth of batteries, a 48 volt charger, a motor controller somewhere in the 400-500 amp range, a MCOR/potentiometer of some sort, a HD FNR switch and solenoid, and large (2 ga. or better) battery and main current cables. Your stock motor will run on 48 volts and give you pretty decent performance (33% torque and speed over stock). Scottyb is THE MAN when it comes to these conversions - his site is http://cartsunlimited.net/ . I recommend you talk to him and tell him what you're wanting to do and he'll tell you what you're gonna need. EDIT: Scotter beat me to the draw lol. His questions are good ones, especially the one about what your plans are for it, that helps a lot in us giving you advice. |

Re: 1985 Club Car DS electric mods
Hi! I have an 85 CC It's 36 volts #2 welding cable complete, I use it at the camp grounds small hills, some paved roads, use it at home in the winter to plow sidewalks and drive ways, has new Trojan batteries, is loaded, elect. stuff, head lights Hi-Lo beams, brake lights , turn signals, flashers, radio, C/D, am, fm, PA System, rotating beacon, snow plow, 12" wheels, Altrax tires, under frame LED light show, 30amp converter, extra 12 volt battery to operate the winch when plowing. I'm still running it stock system resistor cart. it's been 4 yrs. still waiting for it to break so I can Install 600 amp controller? Oh Ya! I have the back seat to haul the grand kids and a hitch I use to pull a trailer with it short distance about a block. Joe100 and I'm just south of Chicago we had are share of snow last winter. Two things I would recommend to any one would be Disc. brakes in back or all4 brakes.
