Default Question about my 96 ds

A few weeks back I bought I bought a 1996 DS, I've been trying to figure out which type of system it has, and to be honest I still don't know. I have the rocker switch f/r, there is a leister obc, there is a controller mounted under there rear body, the motor looks to be a series motor (no speed sensor wires or additional wires coming from the motor), there is the rectangular voltage reducer mounted low behind the batteries, and one resistor coil mounted in the same location. It came with a 48v powerdrive charger.

So can anyone tell me is this a series cart? Serex? Or something else.

Thanks,
Tom

Does it look like this? Is this cart rare?

I'm guessing it's a Regen 1 cart and that thing you think is a voltage reducer with a coil is actually the braking coil and solenoid.

You are describing a Regen 1 Club Car DS 48v Sepex golf cart.

Yes the cart looks the same, but the motor does not. I'm somewhat lost as the resistor only has to wires connected to it. And the voltage reducer looks just like every other one I've seen a picture of. The two parts I'm talk about being mounted low, there defiantly is not a solenoid mounted there. There is one solenoid mounted up high near the controller.

Other than I did not see the additional three wires going to the motor, and the diagram does not have the voltage reducer shown. Mine has the voltage reducer mounted to same plate as the resistor coil right behind the batteries. The resistor coil is shown in the diagram.

Assuming it is a regen 1, what makes them so bad? The cart seems to run well, at least to me. Although, other than rentals on the golf course, this is my first cart. But nonetheless it seems it will do well for my camping purposes. I was just trying to figure out what it is, so when it comes time for repairs or parts, I know what I'm looking for.

I have owned one which has been used at the golf course 4 times per week for over 12 years - and it has been reliable for me. I replaced the controller with a rebuilt one about 4-5 years ago. Other than that - for me (and I'm among very few apparently) no problems. BUT from what I've heard they don't tolerate much abuse (eg. deep puddles/mud will mess up the accelerator POT box (modern carts use a sealed MCOR). Once the POT box starts to fail - apparently the cart can start to move uncommanded! Also the old black Regen 1 controllers (if they fail) are typically replaced with a Regen 2 controller and you end up with a Frankencart. Also the original OBC (red light - not amber) is failure prone - although that may be true of all OBC's based on what I've read. They are not easy to upgrade - not programmable in any sense, although you can buy a performance motor which will eliminate the Regen function - and gain maybe 4-5 mph. If you want more than that, you have a lot of re-wiring and $$ to spend. I think that's about the whole story re: Regen 1.
