Default charging receptacle fuse spec

Hi All,

I'm in the middle of converting my 36V CC DS to be 48V. I'm planning on using a MAC charger from a 48V Yamaha Drive that I have to charge the newly converted cart. I've bought a Yamaha type receptacle to put on the cart, but that receptacle doesn't have a fuse similar to the "bubble fuse" that is on the mounting plate of the original 36V receptacle. Rather than kludge it together and using the existing bubble fuse, I figured I'd go to an auto parts store and pick up an inline fuse to put between the receptacle and the battery pack. Does anybody have advice for what size fuse to use?

The more I think about it, I don't see why any fuse is necessary. The chargers have fuses in them, so isn't this fuse redundant?

Its necessary to protect the cart during charging and i would buy the 12$ part. If your charger puts out 18a and 48v and you want to buy your own at the auto store you should get a 48v 20aDC fuse. I dont think you will find one. Spend the 12 and save hundreds if something fails. My .02

Can you elaborate? The only thing I can think of is that the cart manufacturers include such fuses because inevitably there will be a few random idiots that end up using charging methods other than using chargers that meet the specs outlined by the manufacturer. As long as I'm using a charger with a breaker on the DC side of the transformer then I don't see the purpose of the fuse incorporated on the charger receptacle.

Am I wrong?

Necessary per the manual nothing more nothing less and it's above my pay grade. Your earlier post was....I don't see why any fuse is necessary.... I think it's your last line of defense but I could be wrong. It appears now you will put one inside the charger on the dc out. I wouldn't recommend eliminating the fuse on a forum.

What's with the hostility? I'm simply pointing out that chargers have such fuses already, so the one in the cart is redundant.

If it is "above your pay grade", and you aren't able to contribute to the thread in a meaningful way then please refrain from trying. It is absolutely your right to take what is printed in the CC owners manual as gospel. I'm very happy for you that you take your cart to an authorized technician every year to have the level of the fluid in the differential checked. Oh, what, you don't do that? I don't either.

If we put down the manual for a second and just use a little logic it is clear to see that annually replenishing the rear with SAE 30 is overkill. I contend that the rear in a golf cart could probably be filled with Wesson corn oil one time, never checked again, and the rear would be fine for the rest of the life of the cart.

I completely understand, and respect, your reasoning behind not wanting to recommend eliminating the fuse on the forum. So let me pose a different question:

Has anyone out there ever had the receptacle fuse blow while charging with a charger that has an incorporated fuse or breaker?

You are getting hostile! You asked can i elaborate and my answer is- it was in the manual. Do what you will and bash all you like.

Calm down boys - it's a legit question. You can build an argument for either case.
Personally I have all see manor of charger and cart fuses on the recharge circuit but, I have never seen one of these fuses blown... ever.
So, lets recap ; some with no fuses, some with double fuse protection, none with a blown fuse.

You make the call, it's your cart.

P.S.
If you are going to offer advice on the forum be prepared to accept criticism or questioning about the advice given
