99 ds v-glide bypass
Hi. I am working on a 99 ds v-glide 36v with a lift and 21" tires. It's a hunting buggy and needs to climb long hills. We burned up 3 battery posts and a couple lugs before I figured out the v glide was not reaching full speed. Made the adjustment to the v-glide and all of the wiring still becomes quite hot when climbing hills with these big tires.
I would like to upgrade all the wiring to 4 ga and install the v-glide bypass solenoid. (And run the cart with the pedal to the floor wheen climbing hills). My question is will I run the risk of sacrificing the fnr switch or main solenoid with this upgrade? Thanks in advance for any advice/help. |

It's a lifted 36v cart. You need to upgrade to 48v. I don't see the heat issue going away you are probably just going to chase it from component to component. Upgrade to 48v and do a MCOR conversion.

I really appreciate your input, and the conversion is definitely the fix but not affordable at this time. I was hoping that taking the v- glide out of the loop and upgrading to 4 ga would stop the damage until the $ was available to do the complete upgrade. I can load up the cart, drive up the hill and see exactly what we have for draw using a clamp on dc ammeter if it would help.

I run the 36V v-glide by-pass (very hilly neighborhood). Works like a champ. You will need the HD FnR. I am running std 36V solenoid(s), 1-main and 1-5th speed by pass. No issues yet and not hot cables or terminals, just slightly warm. But Sunoco is correct. If all connections are not clean and tight, you will chase possible component failure. Truly, the 48V upgrade should be in your future.

Not to hijack the thread but can someone explain the v glide bypass? Is it referring to using micro switches with 5 solenoids?

So the v glide still has to be used but its 5th resistor goes to some type of solenoid?

Thanks for the input, Scotter. That is good news. I will be installing all new cables and connectors. Could you point me in the right direction for a HD FnR?

The way I understand it, the bypass would be a separate (heavy duty?) solenoid that is actuated by the last contact on the v-glide. This contact essentially becomes just a 36 volt switch. The full speed voltage would come from the solenoid instead of the v-glide.
