Default Relay for voltage reducer not working

Hello. I have a 1991 36-volt Club Car DS. Just installed a 20-amp voltage reducer. I tried to install the relay to turn off the power to the reducer through the key switch. I wired it per the picture in the "Switch for Voltage Reducer" thread. It wouldn't work. Checking the voltage from the blue wire at the key switch, I had a little over 31 vdc?? Battery pack is fully charged, reading ~ 38.7volts. Is the voltage at the switch (31 vdc) not enough to activate the relay, or do I have a negative-switched key switch? Right now, I have the voltage reducer wired through a 24 vdc marine switch and it seems to be working fine. I would really like to just use the key switch though. Any ideas?

I can't find that thread but it looks like you do have Hot key switched. Check to make sure your relay is rated for at least 36v dc and it is rated for 30 amps. You would just need that wire from the switch to one side of the relay coil (+) and the other side of the relay coil to (-) from the battery. This should switch power with the key switch, thus allowing the contacts on the relay to close thus providing power to the converter. Make sure to wire the relay normally open shelf state (no power). The only other issue is the converter itself, usually they have a wire specifically for them to turn on so in reality you may not need a relay as it is built into the converter but it won't hurt to do it the way you're saying. I'd need your converter specific diagram to know that.

Thanks. I can't find that thread right now either, but here is the picture I used. It's the exact relay.

My converter only has 3 wires, so no switch wire. I'm also concerned about the voltage drop at the key switch. Not sure right now if the cart was in neutral or if the selector was between F/R when I measured, if that even makes a difference on this year cart.

Which relay are you using? The one in that thread, Potter & Brumfield T9AP1D52 does not come in 36v coil. The 48v version has a minimum pickup of 36v.
Also, Your 20amp converter will need less than 10amps on the 36v switching side.
Switching DC is harder on the contacts as there is no 0v crossing to help break the contact connection, so as scooterman suggested, it is a good idea to underrate the capacity when switching DC.
Just FYI, that same relay rated for 30amps at 250VAC, is only rated for 20Amps at 28VDC.

Edit: Well, I see they actually have a part # for the 36v coil, but it is not listed in the datasheet so I am not sure about the specs.

When You say:

You mean the 36v from the pack positive goes to that switch and then to the converter?

This is the description "NEW RELAY, FOR 30AMP 36V BATTERY CHARGERS, POTTER & BRUMFIELD, P/N T9AP1D52-36-01" Mouser specs have it at 36V coil voltage. So not the exact relay, but the same part number in 36V version. I have no idea of the current draw on the converter. Are you saying it won't switch with less or more amps? Thanks.

Here's the spec sheet on the relay. http://www.mouser.com/ds/2/418/NG_DS...T9A-196289.pdf

That is the same spec sheet I saw, there is no reference to a 36v coil model.....

Anyway, we crossed posts. Are You getting the 36v for the converter directly from the pack positive?

Yes, exactly. Then 12vdc from converter to fuse block for lights, adapter, and future small amplifier for mp3. I'm also running a common ground block from pack for everything.

Edit: I only wired the switch after the coil wouldn't work. I originally had it wired directly from pack.

The weird part is not even the manufacture site lists a 36v model of that relay...
http://www.te.com/catalog/bin/TE.Con...BML=18110&LG=1

Does the part # printed on the relay shows the "-36" for coil voltage?

I see what you mean. I can't check the part number right now, but here is the link where I got it. Prolly the wrong relay?
