we paint a few different ways. here's the break down though
there's many ways but the following is what we've found to work best for us over the years for atv plastics, dirtbikes, etc.

clean the plastics really well first. we use a commercial plastic cleaner called TPO plastic cleaner. you can find it at most stores.. walmart, ace, etc.

once clean you need to sand... you can use 400-600 wet sand paper. you basically want to dull the surfaces.

we save some time and sand blast the surface using aluminum oxide 70 grit.

after this step you clean once again... we use a pumice cleaner with a red scotebrite pad. we use scuff magic plastic cleaner from urethanesupply.com but you could use something like comet or even just dawn soap with the scotebrite pad.

rinse and let dry or blow dry.

next we use an adhesion promoter... bulldog, plastic magic adhesion promoter (urethanesupply.com) they both work excellent.

follow instructions to a T.

we typically do two light wet coats with 3-5 mins between coats, then final coat and wait 15-20 mins before proceeding

next we use a flexible primer (black cats flexible primer - again urethanesupply.com) this primer allows flexing to a 2inch diameter bend at -25 degrees celcius without breaking, flaking, or cracking... we've tested this product beyond the recommended flex point and it holds excellent.

with this product you need to wait 8 hours to cure OR speed cure (instructions tell you the process on speed curing)

once cure you wet sand again with 320-400 grit

rinse off, let dry.

ready for your basecoat now...

we use urethanes... from dupont, ppg, alsacorp, etc.

urethanes now-a-days have a flex additive already in them but you can add more if you like.....

the prepping and priming is the key in ALL this... once you get to this point you can use any automotive paint and clear that you want... it's ALL about making the first layers adheir to the plastic surface.

2-3 basecoats (more if u want/need) let flash time occure between coats...

2-3 clear coats (more if u want/need) same with the flash time per directions...

once dry you can either wetsand with 800, 1000, 1500, 2000 grit then buff the surface to a shine

or another method is wetsand with 600-800 grit then shoot another layer of clear coat to give it a slick surface without having to buff unless you want a REAL nice shine...

another method for less flexible surfaces is bumper cladding adhesive primer... this is the same product car dealers use for painting plastic bumpers on cars/trucks... with this product you skip the adhesion promoter and the flexible primer steps...

you can simply sand/scuff shoot the bumper cladding... and almost immediately start base coat.

the directions say you dont even HAVE to sand or scuff the surface... but we do to make double sure...

we've had great success with and without sanding with bumper cladding though on test panels and our own paint projects.
