Default Solenoid diode vaporized

Hey guys,

I have a 95 club car ds 48v that I have been putting together and the help here has been amazing. I have it running and was going to put the body back on, but first put the resistor and diode on the solenoid that had been off for testing. Hit the gas and the diode on the activation circuit made a noise, a little smoke and now all I have left is the wire on both ends of the diode with nothing in the middle. I assume this diode serves a purpose, but the cart still runs without it. Here's my questions:

1- I have bypassed the OBC and run a wire from the neg activation post to the b- on the controller. Do I still need to replace the diode?

2- If I do need to replace the diode, what could have caused it to fail and what do I need to do to make this not happen with a new diode?

Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

#1 Yes
#2 You probably installed the diode backwards.

I don't think my 99 DS has a diode and resister on the solenoid. I'll have to check it.

Ok. I will replace it then, but I'm about 99% sure I had the silver bar towards the positive terminal. What is the purpose of this diode? And what are the possible consequences of leaving the diode off?
