Need that little extra push
Hi,
I have a 2001 ezgo electric pds golfcart ,with a Dcx 400 pds, ITS throttle 36 volt. 2012 us 2000 battery's Stock solenoid 2 gauge battery cables Stock motor 22" tires What I'm doing is pulling my 17ft boat about 400 yards to the boat ramp with no problem at all , there are no hills. When I go to pull the boat out, and the ramp is not real steep or long, It pulls it out but shakes a little and sometimes need a little push from someone. I don't mind spending the money on a torque motor if that's what it takes. I just what to be able to come right out on my own. I just bought the 400 amp controller not long ago so I hate to buy another. I'm so close but just not sure what the next best thing would be, hate to spend the money on a hi torque motor if that's not going to work. any ideas? Terry |

Re: Need that little extra push
With the 22" tires and the boat ramp duty, you need to get some hill/torque gears. This will cost you a couple mph top speed, but what you are doing right now is gonna cost you a motor (and a sepex motor failure usually kills controller too). When it is shaking on the boat ramp, the motor is "stalled", converting all energy into heat, not movement. This heat is sure to destroy the commutator & armature windings. The hill/torque gears will reduce the mechanical load, and allow the motor to get spinning on the ramp. The "stall" condition i described above needs to be avoided at all costs, every time that happens, imagine burning cash in your wallet.

Probably ought to upgrade that stock solenoid too.

Re: Need that little extra push
You are using the cart in a very heavy duty way. I am guessing your boat and trailer, plus the drag of the water, weigh considerably more than two average men and their golf bags.
You need to go heavy duty with everything. Not just the wires and controller. As CGTECH said, you're burning up your motor. I would guess, if you have experienced this enough to write about it, you have already gone beyond the point of no return. Here's a plan I recommend. Pull the motor and send/take it to a reputable motor builder or replace it. Replace the remaining drive line parts with heavy duty equivalents and either go back to stock size tires or change the gear set. The other option would be to buy/use the proper vehicle for pulling your boat. I'm not really trying to be as negative as I may sound. But you are, by several times, exceeding the parameters of the design of the cart. |

Re: Need that little extra push
Does your cart have new steering or old steering? If you have a steering box mounted on the cart frame, look for an old style Bad Boy Buggy front axle
An extra drive motor and your controller will give you enough torque to drag a dump truck up a boat ramp. |

Re: Need that little extra push
Sounds cool when you say it quick, but i dont think i'd try running two sepex motors off one controller.

Re: Need that little extra push
Having never dealt with SepEx circuits personally, I am quite certain you know more about them than I do. My cart is a series drive and the end result was very impressive! It was a thought, though...

Re: Need that little extra push
I don't know, kab69440. EZGO lists their utility carts as having 600 pounds towing capacity. I'm sure the 17 foot boat exceeds that. Coupled with the drag from the water and the "towing drag" will far exceed 600 pounds of force. Even with 4 wheel drive, the frame would not have been upgraded. Nor would the drive axle(s). While the 4 wheel drive system may offer enough torque and traction to pull the boat out of the water, it would still not be the right vehicle for the job. And the task would still far exceed the design of the vehicle.
