Finishing voltage from Powerwise 28115-G01
I am using an older Powerwise 28115-G01 charger (36 V.) on my 1 1/2 yr old Trojan T-105's. The charger is operating properly, except to me, the finishing voltage always seemed a little high. Nothing has changed since I started using this charger so it is operating the same now as when I first started using it. I recently recorded the finishing voltages and the charging currents for a full charge (batteries were at approx. 90% SOC) and here's what I got over approx. a 6 hr. period:
First check (1/2 hr in) V =42.5 I = 16 A. 2nd check (2 hr in ) V =44.5 I = 6 A. 3rd check (4 hr in V = 45.6 I = 1.5A Final check (6 hr aprx)V = 46.1 I = 1 A Does the 46.1 Volts seem high for a finishing charge ? Does the 6 hr charge for 90% SOC bats. seem long? I know Trojan calls for 46.5 V for equalize so it's getting close to that. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks - Ray Last edited by bigstik40; 11-29-2014 at 09:39 AM.. Reason: clarify |

Re: Finishing voltage from Powerwise 28115-G01
The 46.1V does seem a smidgen high, but not hurt your batteries high.
The charger is eventually shutting off, isn't it? (6 hours does seem a bit long from 90% SoC) I take it you are measuring the voltage that the main + & - terminals on the battery pack. The charger is looking at the outside of the negative radsok in the carts charge receptacle, so it might not be seeing the same voltage. To measure what the control board in the charger sees, you have open the charger and measure the voltage on the red and black wires going to the control board. Cleaning the outside of the negative radsok in the charge receptacle and the auxiliary contact in the charger plug might lower the pack voltage the charger shuts off at. |

Re: Finishing voltage from Powerwise 28115-G01
Thanks for the "comeback", Johnnieb. Voltage is from my SOC meter and represents voltage at the pack + and -. Actually, I'm not using the 3rd wire in the charge cable and the board is seeing voltage inside the charger. I think sensing at the negative radsock will actually cause a small increase in the finish voltage (right?). The charger has always shut off by itself, so that part is working (I think). Maybe I should just spring for a new board and call it a day. BTW, Do you know what the shutoff voltage range for these chargers should be ? - Thanks - Ray

Re: Finishing voltage from Powerwise 28115-G01
It would be better to spring for a DPI Accusense charger.
It float charges, solving the storage issues. -------- The typical shutoff voltage is in the 44V to 46V range, but 46.1V is fine. I wouldn't have said anything except I thought you might be getting some tarnish on the radsok, which would only get worse. Since you are sensing the battery voltage inside the charger, 46.1V may be normal. Just check the shutoff voltage occasionally. If it starts climbing above 47V, it is time to fix/replace the charger. |

Re: Finishing voltage from Powerwise 28115-G01
I'll just let it be for now and keep on using it. The SOC meter on the cart makes it pretty easy to monitor the shut-off voltage once in a while and I'll keep an eye on it. Thanks again for your wisdom. - Ray
PS=I also have questions coming up for a Powerwise III I'm repairing, but I'll put that in a new thread. |

I agree with JohnnieB about the DPI charger. Thinking back on the money I've sunk into my cart, the DPI charger is at the top list when it comes to money well spent.

Re: Finishing voltage from Powerwise 28115-G01
I had a sneaking suspicion that was what you meant.
It's laid out differently, but works the same way your Powerwise does. (All the ferroresonant transformer type GC chargers work about the same.) Open a new thread, so others can find it in a search, and fire away with any questions. Here is a manual for it. |
