Default Axe 400 48v fried after charging day after FR mods

On my 96 Ezgo series cart: series motor with past mod to 48v via 8v's, and 8yr old 36-48v Axe 400 and a White HD 48v solenoid.
Sat for a while with old batteries: I recently put in new batteries, new 2 ga cable set, and new HD contactor FR kit with rocker switch. After getting these new items installed it ran like a champ all day, various drives, a mile or two total, no problems.
Batt read a hair less than 48v when I put on charge with key switch off. Charged overnight, read 50.2 or so: unhooked charger and I started to back it out and it chattered/slammed hard into reverse. When it rolled to a stop I switched to fwd and it did the same with some crackling arcing sounds then died. When I lifted the seat there was some smoke coming out of the axe contoller. Turned keyed it of and back on, tried the pedal once more and just smoke. I unhooked batt cables and let it sit.
I'm sure I got a good life out of the Axe, but I want to make sure no problems in my FR mod rewiring would have contributed to its demise before I stick a new one in. Odd that it happened immediately after charging the batts. Any thoughts or possible errors in wiring anyone can think of to check on?

If you drove it around just before it cooked, i would say wiring was not likely the problem.
