Default Motor Questions

2001 TXT 36v Series Cart. 6:1 high speed gear. 500 amp Alltrax Controller. 20 inch tires.

My D&D High Speed motor (170-006-0001 - 21 mph motor) bit the dust after 6 years. Called D&D about rebuilding it. Vic (nice guy) was shocked it lasted as long as it did given my set up and the fact I use my cart for golf (because I'm not running full speed with motor).

Question 1: I still have my original motor (73445G01) which is an Advanced D.C. Motors, Inc. motor (specs say 14.9 mph with standard gear, 2.0 hp). Will this motor be able to handle my current setup with upgraded controller, high speed gear and 20 inch tires? I know I'll lose some top end speed, but want to be able to use my cart until I get a replacement for D&D motor.

Which leads to next question:

Anyone have an recent experience with the EMP 2 speed motors? Vic at D&D said he can build me a custom motor that will get me the same top end speed as the one I just fried, but will have more torque and will be able to handle not running at full speed all the time. It will be a vented motor. Cost $675. I've called EMP 3 times about the 2 speed motors, but always get voicemail. It is my understanding the 2 speed set up is a "torque" setting in low speed and "speed" setting in high speed and that you can switch from one setting to the other on the fly. Based on what I've read, this will be significantly less expensive than getting a custom motor (it is about 250 to have them convert a motor to the 2 speed set up). Appreciate all of the responses.

But I NEED to hear about using that cart for golf - do you smoke your partners off the tee box? I'm dying to get mine (same motor) out on the course.

The stock motor might move the cart for a few days, but it also might only move it for a few feet.
It simply is not designed for that final drive ratio, or a 500A controller.

In a nutshell, with 20" and 6:1 gears, the motor only spins 100.8 RPM per MPH, so you need a motor that is efficient at lower end of the RPM spectrum. In other words, a High-Torque motor is needed and installing any motor with the words "High-Speed" in the description is akin to tossing money into a toilet and flushing it down the drain.

Even a highest torque of High-Torque motors is going to generate a lot of heat at golf course speeds with that final drive ratio, so venting would definitely be advisable.

I have seen stock sepex motors last many years with 6:1 gears, also seen them last 6 months. Just depends on how its treated. 400a is the max i have had good luck with on stock motors, runs nice on 500+ amps, just doesnt last long.

He has a series cart. (73445G01 and 170-006-001 motors mentioned)

But you're right, he'll probably get more than just a few days out of a stock series wound motor.

I was preaching more gloom and doom than I should have.

Don't think it is the motor. Put my old fleet cart motor in it a few minutes ago (was working when I put the high speed motor in it) and am having the same issue. I just replaced Solenoid with Super Duty Solenoid 2 weeks ago was running fine until I got in it yesterday. When I hit the throttle it makes a hissing sound and then a loud pop!

Checked all of the connections F&R, batteries, solenoid, controller and motor.

I'm stumped.

I still am interested in the EMP 2 speed motor, looks like it is a good fit for my cart use. Checked the thread on it, but all the posts are old. None of the cart gurus here have any experience with them?

Hissing sound then pop is usually one of 2 things. A bad connection at a battery terminal, trying to be a welder when load is applied. Or mosfets and/or diodes in motor controller releasing their magic smoke.

May be the controller. checked all the connections and they are tight. The resistor on the Super Duty solenoid is getting hot as h*** though.
