Default Re: Charging cart with a generator

I take my cart to antique engine/tractor shows, and used to display a WWII M5 genset. That machine is 120 volt, 3-phase, 3Kva, it will provide 13-15 amps on any one phase. I also carry a Honda 1000i inverter genset to charge my trailer batteries if the solar panels won't keep up.

Trying to charge the cart from the Honda didn't work, it would trip out on overload. However, if I plugged it in to the M5 for a half-hour to an hour, until the charge rate dropped to 10 amps or so, I could move the charger plug to the Honda and let it run until the cart was fully charged. The M5 has a Hercules 4-cylinder engine, running at 1200 RPM and is very quiet and not bad on fuel, but it doesn't compare to the Honda.

At one time, I was going to add a resistor coil from a golf cart to the Lester charger so I could drop the charging rate during the initial charging period, but never got around to it.

Last year, mice got into the M5 and ruined it, so I used an old Onan 2.5 Kva water-cooled genset to charge the cart. This year, it will also have to charge my GE ElecTrak garden tractor that I plan on exhibiting.
