option to increase speed
recently added 22' tires (on 12 rims), rear seat and 4' lift kit to 99 txt series cart with stock curtis controller (part #2586g03) and stock engine. top speed is 15mph according to speedometer app.
looking to add a bit more speed what is recommended, upgrading engine to 4hp for 36v cart or upgrading controller/solenoid to 400amp and increasing pack to 48v? looking for some guidance as this is my first cart and im certain there are other factors to consider |

Re: option to increase speed
I believe controller 2586g03 is a series controller so there are only 3 ways to speed up a series cart.
1) Bigger tires or gear change 2) Increase voltage 3) Install a high speed motor (not recommended with #1 above) |

Re: option to increase speed
thanks sportcoupe. i do have larger tires so it sounds like increasing voltage is way to go. out of curiosity why is larger engine & tires a bad mix?
also, any idea how much additional speed increasing voltage from 36 to 48 produces? |

Re: option to increase speed
"larger" is not a problem, "wound for higher speed" is the problem. In a "series" application, speed vs. torque is always a trade-off at any given volts & amps. Batteries determine voltage, and generally speaking, controller ratings limit amps.

Re: option to increase speed
cgtech i think i get it, and i stress "i think"! my series stock motor and current tire set up can handle increase in voltage as opposed to stock controller and tire setup handling new engine that is wound for higher speed.

Quote:
Going from 36v to 48v will increase both speed and torque by 33% each when keeping the 36v motor. |

Re: option to increase speed
many thanks guys. will move forward w/ 36v to 48v and also know why!!!
i can now move onto figuring out how to best increase voltage. for now i can begin track down 2 additional batteries, then 48v charger and controller/solenoid & FNR from site sponsor CU. |

Re: option to increase speed
ScottyB from CU has all those upgrades available and has excellent customer service. His controller/solenoid packages are extremely competitive in pricing. Ask about his DPI chargers, they are some of the best in the business for much less then a factory charger.

Re: option to increase speed
Just getting rid of the stock controller wont net you much mph (if any) on a series cart, but torque & reliability will be far better. Stock controller just wasnt designed for increased or upgraded anything. Be sure to get rid of the stock solenoid (it was Terrible, even for stock use).
