Default 9 batteries

Hey everyone. New to the cart owning. I bought a 2001 ezgo 36v cart with 6" lift last week. It has gell type batteries in it. I am confused to why it has 9 batteries in it. 9x4 is 36 but pretty sure they don't make 4 volt golf cart batteries. I haven't had a chance to pull one out to read what they are. Any ideas? Thanks. Bout to get to reading some threads.

Lead-acid cells are 2V and you pack as many 2v cells in a box as needed to get the desired battery voltage.

I suspect the previous owner worked someplace that used 4V batteries in their battery back-up system.

Each of the 3 rows in the attached picture is 48V, but it might be difficult to fit them into a cart.
