Default Jakes disc brake install 08 RXV

Some of you may find this interesting. I have an 08 ezgo rxv...it has been a project in the works for about 5 years. I converted it to street legal myself, just by following all the federal and state guidelines. I then had to submit all my reciepts, pictures of modifications made and a picture of the serial# of my cart. I met alot of resistance at the court house but was successful in getting a Tn title and license tag. I had a factory trained mechanic install a 13:1 ratio gear. No mods to the motor or controller. GPS speed 34mph with 10 inch low pro tires.
The speed was awesome, but I was always a little nervous about the rxv brake.
Today I installed the Jakes disc brake kit...It was fairly simple and made a tremendous difference in the stopping power !! At least 70% better. I recommend this kit highly to anyone who has modified their cart for speed !!

Thanks for your time...sorry I rambled..I'm 72 going on 31..just havin fun!

Great Info...

I have spoken out against high speed gears on RXV's because of the lack of stopping power.

Glad you are safe!!!

Please post pics, I have a spare rear end that was removed for the input pinion whine. Just waiting to upgrade it to a taller gear set and see what happens. Brakes holding me back

We just put a set on my sister's EZGO and they made a huge difference. We're in the hills and the stock rear drums are not nearly enough stopping power. It is a great kit but the instructions could be better. Took tow of us wanna be engineers to figure it out but then again, we are a little slow sometimes!

The only problem we had was deflection of the stock brake bracket because the master cylinder is offset. This resulted in inconsistent application of the fronts. My brother in law fashioned a guide bracket with a hole to pass the rod through and now it stays straight.

High speed gear sets for RXV are available on ebay for

$290 from East Coast Carts ( ratio not stated )

$ 529.95 from Advantage Distributors ( 13.69 : 1 ratio )

Note: when you install this gear, top end speed is greatly improved...BUT it does reduce the initial torgue from a dead stop...takes a little getting used to.

Someone requested pics...will be glad to do so if someone will tell me how, and the exact procedure !

The flip side of the reduction in take off torque is a reduction in brake performance
equal to the torque loss.

Remember motor IS brake.

Tall gears REQUIRE add on brake system for safety.
Might find RXV w/2 "burn off resistors" for this mod so regen energy has a place to go.

HiTech what do you mean by 2 burn off resistors, thought you always discuss never messing with rxv wiring, is the second resistor and add on and how?

My brakes always worked just fine...never had issues....just in my head wondered what I would do if they failed...now I have disc for back up. Mis-interpeted my statement of loss of torque..very little loss...I pull a 900 lb dolly around the campground...use the cart to back it up and park it. Obviously hightech isn't a fan of rxv. Beam me up scotty...

Its a kit available from ezgo, not "homemade". I have only seen it for "danaher" model rxvs. only found it useful on extreme hills, or with high speed gears. the resistor is typically only used when the batteries are fully charged and that controller has no where to put the power (batteries are already full).
