Default Cutting Door In Rear Flip Seat Bed Material

I removed the black bed panel in a rear flip seat and added a storage bin in the golf bag well. I want to cut a door in the bed material which is plastic and about 1/2". I was curious as to the best way to cut this material. Sabre saw, circular saw, band saw?

I would just use a circular saw and go slow. Plunge it at the back and cut corners with a hacksaw blade

That was my first thought using a 5" cordless circ saw then doing the corners with a jig saw.

I just got an email back from the shop I bought the cart from. They do lots of conversions and custom work. He told me to use a jig saw. He said that he has done this many times and it works well. I have a small B&D VPX recip saw that uses jig saw blades I can do the plunge cut with. I need to go to the drug store first for a fresh box of bandaids. I don't seem to be able to do anything anymore without drawing blood.

If it's handheld, I'd use sabre saw blades over jigsaw blades. Having the kerf cut on the upstroke does a lot to enhance control.

It's easier to cut a straight line with a circular saw than a jig saw. However if you use a circular saw you will have to make 4 plunge cuts which is an advanced move & does pose the danger of saw kickback. You will still need the jig saw to finish the cuts in the corners where the skill type saw cannot cut full depth... be careful out there

Mission accomplished. I found a spiral plunge and cut bit for my cordless dremel. I did a plunge along the back hinge line and cut a slot big enough for the saw blade. I used a 14 tpi metal cutting blade in my Ryobi cordless jigsaw and clamped down a yard stick for a guide. It cut like butta'. Lots of black plastic saw dust. Piece of cake.

I ended up using a piano hinge. All I need to add is a pull ring of some type.

Thanks for all the input.

Rick

I'm thinking if I do this, I'll cut the whole "board" in 3 pieces and snip the piano hinge where the door ends.

Think that will work?

Cutting into three parts might make it easier to cut but I don't know how your hinging would work. The way my flip seat is hinged there is a gap when you raise and lower the seat and I don't think a piano hinge would work hinging it from one panel to another.
