12v Aux Battery
What battery is everyone using as an aux power supply? Full size car battery? Smaller lawn tractor or motorcycle type battery?
I would like to run the headlights/tailights, A radio and speakers (nothing too big) and possibly a small converter to run various christmas lights for decorations through out the year. May also add an LED lightbar down the road. I currently have the headlights and tailights only but will adding the other stuff eventually. They are hooked up to two batteries out of the pack for now but want something a little better. I have a 36v ezgo txt. |

I run a 12 volt deep cycle Rv - marine sealed battery. I put it under the seat of my CC DS. I use a battery tender to keep it charged. The worse thing you can do is use your pack batteries without a reducer

Re: 12v Aux Battery
I use a 12v 35ah power chair type battery. Glass mat construction so no maintenance. Mounted on drivers side with conventional (cheap) battery hold down from an auto parts store. Didn't even need to drill any holes. Charge it with a basic $30 maintainer form wally world. Has its own charge plug. Powers lights and MP3 sound system also aux power plug. To date I haven't been able to stress it enough to cause lights to dim. Into it's fourth trouble free year.

Re: 12v Aux Battery
Just like the cart drive batteries, required capacity depends on load. More capacity will give more "on" time for a given load. This battery has been more than enough for me but my sound system is relatively low power. One small amp and 5" speakers. Lights are still incandescent. LED would draw less power. If you are going to install a powerful sound system or a winch you will probably need more.

Re: 12v Aux Battery
It should be a either a deep cycle or marine type battery. Motorcycle and lawnmower batteries are SLI (Car type) batteries and are designed to provide a lot of amps to the starter for a brief period of time and be recharged immediately after starting the engine. Deep cycle batteries are designed to provide fewer amps over a long period of time and are more tolerant about when they are recharged charged. Marine batteries are somewhere between SLI and Deep Cycle batteries.
How many AH needed depends on how much power (Watts) your 12V accessories use and how long you want to use them between charges. A 12V 35AH battery stores about 420 Watt-Hours (12V X 35AH) of energy. If your headlight bulbs are 55W each (Halogen) and the tail lights are about 10W each, you use 130W, so a 420WH battery will run them for about 3 hours, but you don't want to discharge below 50%, so it's half of that or about 90 minutes of continuous use. On the other hand, the LED head/tail/brake light with turn signals I use could run continuously for a day and a half on a 12V 35AH battery with out going below 50% SoC. (But I use 42V to 12V converter.) ------------ FWIW: A 12V SLI batter will work, it just won't last very long. Might have to replace it every year while a deep cycle type will last for several years. |

Re: 12v Aux Battery
I use a starting battery from a clunker I sent to the scrap yard about ten years ago. I wouldn't trust it in a daily driver, but to power cart accessories, it works fine. I also use a trickle charger/ maintainer to keep it charged.
