Battery Exploded!
Hi!
Proud owner of a new to me 1990 Marathon cart. I picked it up for dirt cheap with a lift and 23in tires. As far as I can tell everything is stock although the previous owner stated that the motor was replaced a few years ago. The cart needed new batteries so I picked up some Costco Interstate battteries (6x6 volt). Install went smooth and I charged them fully - all seemed well. i took the cart on an extended test drive and around mile 4 I was pulling a steep hill wide open (my community is very hilly and the majority of the drive was wide open). As i near the top of the hill there is a loud bang and the cart stops moving. Once I get it home I see the below: I know that the 23in tires must put extra load on the entire system but what would cause a battery to fail that catastrophically? Thanks all - I'll have pics of the cart up soon. |

Re: Battery Exploded!
I would let Interstate look at that. It appears that it came from inside, like a plate separation. Low electrolyte will cause this. All you need is a spark. Most all of the batteries I have seen blow up, the spark came from outside and takes the whole top off the battery. I have seen this first hand a few times doing road service on stalled cars.

Re: Battery Exploded!
i have an 89 marathon and have put it through some serious stuff including hills. I'm guessing this was a specific battery problem and not related to over working the cart.

Re: Battery Exploded!
Could a loose connection at the battery cause this or would that look more like a meltdown?

Re: Battery Exploded!
with a loose connection you would see were it arced out, were is the stud ?. I notice what looks to be a washer or lock washer on the other post . I myself DO NOT use any washers...To me it weakens the connection.

Re: Battery Exploded!
Damage doesn't look like a meltdown. I have seen some batteries explode and they did not look like that either. Usually it blows the caps out or cracks the case. I would take it back and ask for a replacement.

Re: Battery Exploded!
That in my opinion for what its worth is not an exploded battery. That battery terminal looks to have gotten hot enough to melt down and into the battery. Notice that the portion of the terminal that makes the internal connection to the plates is still there? What's missing is the portion of the terminal that the cable connects to. You could very well have wire or wires that has too much internal resistance due to corrosion and this created a lot of heat, enough heat to melt down the low temp lead.
You stated that you just bought this cart and was running it around your very hilly community. Golf carts were never meant to be run long and hard; they were meant for playing golf which allows a lot of stop in go for cooling off the heated parts. Or as commented by VA above you may have received a defective battery... Last edited by teecro; 05-26-2015 at 06:52 PM.. Reason: Hit send too soon... |

Re: Battery Exploded!
I disagree. I think it was a battery explosion based on the reported bang! It doesn't look like melt down damage. It would be good to have a picture of the lug that came off. More Pix!

Re: Battery Exploded!
Yes I agree more pix could help explain.... I read the "bang" but I just don't see the expanded or cracked case that one would associate with an exploded battery.....

I am curious what interstate will say about it. I say it went boom, from the picture. I am subscribed for more info.
