Default Question on Speed

As stated on my introduction post, I am going to pick up a 1999 EZGo TXT Series, 36V system. When I test drove it, according to my GPS, it was topping out at 18mph (I'm 250lbs+), on flat paved road (16.5 with the fam loaded in it). The owner did not do anything to upgrade it (controller, motor, etc) and was unsure if the previous owner did anything. So here are my questions:

1. Does 18mph seem about right? (I attached a pic of the cart at the bottom so you can get a feel for tire size, its got a 6" lift on it). Based on my search, it seems that these should max out at around 13mph, unless its the "Freedom" model. I don't know how to tell if it is or not.

2. This will eventually be street legal, and I'd like to bump the speed up a little (30mph max). Plus, I've got a bridge that I need to climb to get to the beach, so I wouldn't mind upgrading the torque. So, with the intension of going to a 48V system in the future (by swapping the 6 6V batteries with 6 8V batteries and the associated wiring) what is the best controller to use? Do I need to also upgrade the motor, or can I get the increase in speed and torque with just the controller? By the way, my use will primarily be carting the family to the beach, and camping, with the only "hill" being a bridge that goes over the intracoastal.

Thanks in advance for the help.

well you got me confused.....is the cart a DCS or a Series drive system cart? it can't be both.

but since you stated the speed being in the 18 mph range....I am guessing its a DCS Sepex Drive, as a Series Drive would be closer to 14 mph, even with the 23" tires. (my guess looking at them) But that is about right for a DCS cart.

SO.....before we get started.....lets confirm which is it.....a Series Drive, or a Sepex Drive??

I caught that right after I posted, and went back to edit it. But yes, I am pretty sure its Series.

well it makes a big difference...lol

The fact that you getting 18 mph out of a stock series cart drive system is amazing.

so to ask a few questions.....is the drive system STOCK? (motor, controller, solenoid, F&R switch, and high current cables).

Well as you found, the normal speed for a series cart is in the 13 to 14 mph range....but you are seeing the normal for a sepex cart......So before we truly get started going through all the things you will need to upgrade to attain your goals as they are totally different pieces/parts required. we really need you to VERIFY which drive system you have.

I was surprised with that, also. When I get it home, in the garage, I'll report back with some pictures and specifics tomorrow. Probably should of had all this info in hand. Its been a while since I've had a little project to work on in the garage, and I'm all excited about it. Since I don't have the cart yet, stuck at work, the next best thing to wrenching on it is to scheme what you'll be wrenching on in forums...

kobx, 18mph does sound out of range for this cart. i have a 99 txt series drive system w/ 4' lift, 22' tires and 12' rims and i topped out at 16 with stock everything except lift and tires. and this was not sustained 16mph but GPS hit 16 and went immediately back to 15mph. i upgraded motor only to plumquick bandit and now i top out at with a sustained speed of 18mph

The factory offered a 18ish mph motor it is labeled ADC AU2500 high speed (as opposed to the 12-14 mph "AU2500 flt speed").

Interesting, thanks for this info. I was hoping by searching my serial number, this type of info would come up. I'll take a pic of the label on the motor and upload it later tonight.

Thank you all for your quick replies.
