Re: adding batterys
Add the same age batteries with same numbers to pack when upgrading and not replacing the entire pack ... the other 6 batteries will bring the 2 new ones down to their age ... so best to find good used ones about same age ... the 12v has a shorter lifespan vs the 6v ..
it might be the way to go if the 6v are halfway through their life cycle tho ... one of the pros will chime in soon with a for sure answer. .. I want to do the 36 to 48 also |

Re: adding batterys
And you will have 60v if you add two 12v

Re: adding batterys
You don't really want to mix batteries with different voltages or amp hour ratings. You will need a new contactor, controller, and charger for sure.

Re: adding batterys
The lower AH batteries will be drawn down into low-voltage damage territory, while the higher AH ones are still going strong (plus some degree of overcharging for the higher AH batts while the lower AH ones "catch up" when charging). Spells a short life for the lower AH batteries, bad times were had by all batteries. The point is, use as closely matched capacity batteries as possible. If you have 225ah 6v's, should add more of those. Several parts of your drive system and charging system would need to be replaced to match the new pack voltage as well.

Re: adding batterys
well my batteries aren't even a year old I just wanna add more batteries to what I have to make more power . I have a 500amp controller beefed up F&R and I added/doubled up all my wires to the system . so I just want to add more batteries for more juice so I was just checking

Re: adding batterys
You mean "series/parallel", so your overall voltage would remain the same? That would work, but each battery would need to be teamed with a "partner", not just a few of them. Or a complete extra 36v pack. That would give you great range, and greatly reduce voltage "sag" when at full amp load. Gonna have to build a trailer for the extra 6 batteries unless you happen to be building a stretch limo cart. If you pick & choose which batteries get a partner, instead of adding 6 more, plan on the ones that didnt get a partner to be ruined quick.

Re: adding batterys
You should not mix different capacity batteries EVER and you should not mix different age batteries either. Since they charge and discharge in series, they should be as well matched in capacity and age as possible.

Re: adding batterys
I agree you should not put batteries of different voltages or amp hour capacities in the same pack but, I disagree about a strict rule on age.
You can put a new battery in an old pack so long as you realize the new battery will become equal to the all batteries soon. In the case of 1 to 1 1/2-year-old batteries this is a marginal sacrifice IMHO |
