4" or 6" lift for multi-use TXT?
Hi guys, I'm a new member and a new golf cart owner. Bought a used 99 TXT DCS for $800 and it is being delivered to me in a week or so. I am going to use it for sporting clays 4 to 6 days a month in Florida, so minimal hills and the courses I shoot are fairly level with only occasional spongy wet or soft ground. The rest of the time it will be used by my wife and kids to go to the beach or to the grocery store, or just cruise around the neighborhood.
I have already got a recommendation from Scotty B on an upgrade package, and am thinking of finding 22 or 23" tires to hopefully build a mid-20 mph cart. My concern on the lift kits is stability while the wife is driving it, or the 11 or 8 yr olds driving with one of us and turning sharply unexpectedly. My questions are: 1. Is there much difference in stability between a 4" and 6" Drop Axle lift kit? I see Jake's, Steeleng, and MadJax all make ones that seem to get positive reviews here. 2. Are new spindles worth the extra cost in the MadJax kit, or are spindles fairly bulletproof? 3. I'm looking for a tire tread that can handle some sand near the beach, some soft/wet turf on the clays courses, and performs well (smooth and relatively quiet) on the pavement. Most of the "All Terrain" I have seen are fairly knobby. Reading through these forums, it seems like Sahara Classic, Duro HF244, and Kendra Terra Trac are the usual suspects, with the Innova Cayman trailing. 4. Would a 20" tire be more stable than the 22" or 23", or would I need to evaluate the overall height gain on the cart with the tire/lift combo? Is there a known height gain where the CG reaches a "tipping point", and becomes less stable? Thanks in advance for the opinions, and thanks for all the great info on this site! Paul |

2) The spindles are a wear item, and it will depend on how well the previous owner(s) took care and greased them. They can also be disassembled to a point and cleaned up. I used my stock spindles after cleaning them up and they perform fine. I am NOT a fan of the Jake's spindles, as they tend to create a bouncy lifting action in the front end when taking off from a dead stop. I have avoiding using the Jake's kits at all for that reason. 3) Madjax has a new tire called the TimberWolf. It is more of an All Terrain tire, less of a Mud Terrain as most of the 23" tires you see on the market are. It should provide the traction you want offroad, and will definitely give you the smoother ride on road. I have used and installed the Predator, TimberWolf and the Raptor. The Raptor is only for those who use almost exclusively offroad. On road it sucks. The Predator is a good tire, more like a mud terrain but the most common tire I sell. The TimberWolf is the newest addition and the best all around for traction and smooth ride on road. They also have an extensive selection of wheels that I don't think you can find more anywhere else for a single vendor. Madjax also stands behind their products really well and if you have any issues they will take care of them, most times without question. 4) Going down to the 20" tire will greatly reduce the tires available, as the 22 and 23 are the most common sizes. The difference in "tipping" point is little at all. Also, the size wheel is going to alter tire prices. Cart wheels have become available recently in up to 14" wheel size. The 14's are the newest latest greatest and most popular option. Depending on how fancy you want to go, they can get expensive fast. Like I said, I have the 98 TXT with 6" lift. 23" tires on 14" wheels. Of course, being a dealer I get all my parts at wholesale dealer pricing and I do all my own labor so it reduces the cost significantly. Of course, I also built it as I got deals or had leftover parts......and it was just a crappy trade in to begin with so it ain't exactly a beauty. At some point I'll get around to painting it..........at some point. The brush guard is a unit I found at the scrap yard and bought for $5. The back seat has no upper seat because that is a club car DS back seat frame I modified to fit. The really crappy rear top mounts I have long since replaced with the proper ones. Like I said, used parts and leftovers are mainly what I used besides the lift and tires. [IMG][/IMG] |

How about a 5"? Most of the drop axle lifts I've seen have been 5". I'm probably going to to with the 5" allsports version that also comes with new spindles.

Re: 4" or 6" lift for multi-use TXT?
I have read here that the drop spindle kits do not ride a good and are not as stable as the double a arm lifts. The lift on my cart, which is worn out, is the only one I have driven so I do not claim to be an expert. I will say when I have the money I will get the madjax double a arm lift.

You need only a 4 inch drop axle or jakes spindle lift and 22" tires to get anyplace a golf cart should be. Lift above this is for looks and tires above 22 are a torque liability in my experience. Bigger lift and tires may look good but they are not what the wife and children need to go to the laundry mat.

Thanks guys. I went down to a local golf cart shop here and they had a ton of tires and wheels I could lay hands on. They had the 22" Timberwolves mounted on MJFX Octane wheels and that looks like the ticket for me. General pricing he said was $400 for 10", $500 for 12", and $600 for 14" for any wheel/tire combo. That's about as good as anything I can find online. Good info on just needing a 4" lift, that saves me time, effort and eventually money. :)

Re: 4" or 6" lift for multi-use TXT?
i just did a jake's 6" spindle lift with 23"tires on my RXV. affordable and 4 hours by myself with hardly any tools. it feels really stable to me. the spindle lift pushes the front tires forward couple inches and 3' wider from hub flanges. i would have loved the a-arm lift just for the bling factor but IMO overkill for my uses. i bought package #18 and use mine on the beach daily to groom the sand and have yet to get stuck .
