PDS Leaking Oil

Hi All, my PDS is leaking oil where the differential meets the motor. I have done some searching and have seen Gornoman mention that this area cleans up nicely, but does that fix the problem or is there another definitive fix?

The underlying problem is actually either the O-ring for the input shaft has gone bad, or the freeze plug on that side of the transaxle is leaking. Just cleaning it up will not take care of the problem. This can lead to big problems as you dont want rear-end oil draining into your electric motor.

I use this kit from yamaha on all older dana electric axles, (PN- "99999-JU200"). It includes new o-ring, new sealed bearing, & add-on oil slinger to keep oil off the sealed bearing & o-ring. It works very well.

Are you talking about the O-Ring that is recessed in the differential where the input shaft slides in? Sorry, I just took it apart and looking at other threads on this forum...that is the only o-ring I see...I pulled it out and it looks good. I am not an o-ring expert. Can it look fine and still be bad? How would I know if its the freeze plug?

Yes to both of these things. I have never seen one of those o-rings physically "torn".

I have only very rarely seen the plugs leak, except when they are reused after high speed gears were installed.

Thank you both for your help. I was able to track down a replacement ring at Advance Auto Parts (Item #641331) for those who may be experiencing this issue and do not want to wait on ordering an o-ring. It was a tad thicker, but not sure if that was because my other one was worn. It fit in the recess just fine though.

I had the fluid plug in when I reinstalled the input shaft and motor. Then when I took out the plug to top off the fluid, there was a bit of an air pop, so I think that is a good indicator that it sealed. Time will tell.
