Default 2001 TXT very slow and won't go far

I recently purchased this cart from someone that had it sitting in storage for at least a year. When I got it he mentioned he thought there was an issue with the battery cables but other than that he thought it just needed charged. I got and topped off the batteries with distilled water (2.5 gallons in all) and replaced all of the battery cables as some were rusted and almost broken. I cleaned it all up and checked the voltage from storage. 7 volts total. I tried to charge the batteries 2 at a time to get the voltage up but didn't have any luck. I put it all back together and plugged in the power wise 2. It kicked on but only stayed on about an hour. I unplugged and re plugged and got another two or three hours. Tested voltage and got 36.7 volts I took it for a drive and was able to go around the house and then it started creeping. I looked under the control cover and found the solenoid had a burnt terminal. I just replaced it but it still acts the same. I re tested voltage and it was still just above 36 volts. The obvious answer is replace the batteries. UT I don't want to make that kind of investment until I'm sure they are bad.

Any thoughts?

If you used 2 1/2 gallons of water to fill the batteries that wasn't topping them off. They were pretty much empty. Once the plates become exposed to air they are gone for the most part.

Yeah, I thought the same thing. When I went to charge it though I could hear them bubbling and fizz ing which I heard was a good sign.

Get rid of that stock solenoid for something a little better. Stock one was too small in the first place. The batteries have not yet gotten a full charge, 36v batteries are not "full" at 36.00v, 38.1v is closer after a rest period after charging. Charge those batteries more times, then some more times, then some more times. Best hope to save them at all requires lots of charge cycles, with only a little use in between charges. I have had some success with abused batteries, but best results to recover whatever life remains will require lots of charge cycles. Keep in mind that they will never be as good as they once were (permanant damage has occured). You never did say how old the batteries were anyway, 4-5 years is about average with decent care, which yours didnt have the luxury of. Also didnt say how you plan to use it, i wouldnt expect to be doing 18 holes with the current batteries (but you could be plesently suprised). Charge the crap out of 'em, then you are gonna have to "feel it out" for how much range you may get (it will improve as more cycles are done).

I did another recharge tonight and they made it to 37.4. Test drive got me around the house twice. I will keep charging and hope for the best.

Even I got a chuckle out of the "topped off" with 2.5 gallons. Those batteries didn't dry up sitting in storage, they were run dry. Chances are they are toast. How old are they? If they aren't ancient (which I suspect they are having sat for a year) then you may want to try the Epsom Salt battery reviver trick. You can look it up and it is described on how to make the solution and how to use it. It's worth a shot for a few bucks, but I think you'll be buying batteries soon

Does anyone here believe in the epsom salt trick as anything more than a old myth, or "very short term" plan? But, yeah, batteries are something you better start saving your pennies for.

I have used it and yes it does sometimes give them a little rebirth. Notice I said sometimes. Considering that a box of the salts are less than $5 it isn't a big loss if it doesn't do anything.....but if it does it gives him a little time to save up for a pack.
