Default 48 > 12 volt converter

I have searched the forum and have not come across the problem that i am experiencing. I am hoping to find helpful info please!
I have a EZ-GO series cart that i upgraded from 36 to 48 volts. At that time i added a Fore-Par 3-498E converter (Thank you Scottie B) to power the headlights, tail and brake lights, etc that are required in my rec community.
Everything worked great for probably a year or so.
Recently i noticed that intermittently my horn would barely be audible, the turn signals would not work and the headlight relay would chatter when activated.
I checked the power supply both in and out of the converter and found that although the incoming power supply was strong and steady the 12 volt outgoing would sometimes be only at 7.0 volts or so and then would slowly but steadily ramp up 0.1 volt at a time all the way up to 12 volts. As the voltage approached 11 volts or so everything started working properly again.
I checked the outgoing 12 volt supply wiring to the terminal block for damage and i do not leave the key 'on' when i am not driving the cart.
I am thinking that the converter is failing. If so isn't a year and a half lifetime premature?
Any ideas for me? Thanks in advance.
Don

Sounds like the converter has gone bad.

Are you getting that 7v reading, when your driving the cart, or when the cart is sitting still

It doesn't seem to matter if i am moving or standing still.

Although i did not have a meter on the 12 volt output as i was driving i did experience the barely audible horn and chattering headlight relay intermittently as i am driving around just as i do when the cart is stationary.

So i think it is fair to say that the voltage does intermittently drop and then ramp up either way ... stationary or moving.

Thanks for any input or ideas though.

I did order a replacement unit.

I have seen that problem before. Check the wiring from the converter for corrosion, specifically in the fuse line for the converter. I don't know what unit you have but it should be a smaller gauge red wire with inline fuse. I have seen that fuse corrode and cause a lack of voltage, but the drop only occurs when you place a load on it. Persay, if you turn on the lights they'll dim. If you blow the horn, it will blow then fade out fast. Trace the wires. A quality electrical part shouldn't fail in a year.

Good idea.

I will check the wiring and all connectors, including the fuse holder, more closely when i next go down to my cabin before replacing the unit.

You never know.

Thanks.
