Default Is RO Purified the Same As Distilled???

I live in a small town, and very few stores carry distilled water. But all of them carry some kind of "purified" water. And many of those specify that it is purified using Reverse Osmosis. But they don't always list the "numbers" as to purity.

Is purified reverse osmosis water as good as distilled???

Is it as good? No...

Is it better than from the tap? Yes

RO means it was passed through a membrane that by all accounts removes all solids down to the tiniest of micron...

I'd make all attempt to get distilled water but failing that would use RO without much guilt...

That's kinda what I thought. But I didn't know if all RO was the same - in other words, use the same membrane.

I thought I remembered seeing that the label on some purified water indicated some minerals, etc. But I can't remember if it said "purified by RO."

I was thinking that maybe the "purified by RO" I just saw didn't have any "specs" on it because it was just pure water - like distilled.

Make sure its RO purified, with zero minerals, salt, ect' added back in "for taste".

Distilled is water that has been heated to the point of evaporation....then the "steam" is run thru a series of cooling tubes that collect the steam as it condenses back into water. During the steaming process, all of the minerals and impurities are left behind in the heated tank. Kind of like the "stuff" left in your hot water tank when you replace it. You know....all of that "stuff" that's in the bottom that has built up over the years. Kind of like that....sort of....

All good answers above.

I use several R/O filters for drinking and fish tanks. R/O water is not quite as pure as distilled. I use only distilled even though I make my own R/O water.

If you can't get distilled water an alternative is rain water. It is almost pure as distilled water.

Keep in mind that rain water is only as good as the method of collection. I wouldn't use rain water collected from a rusty steel roof.

Deionized (DI) water is about the purest form of water commonly available, but even DI water comes in different levels of purity. (Then there are the Ultra-pure waters used in the semiconductor industry and pharmacopeia.)

Distilled water is the next step down, followed by Reverse Osmosis (RO), but there is some overlap between the two. IE: The water from some RO systems is purer than the water from some distilling process, especially the single stage distillers.

The good news is that the purity level of water for use in batteries is relatively low. Specifically, the maximum allowable impurities for battery water is measured in parts per million while it is measured in parts per billion and parts per trillion for more critical uses.

I've got access to Ultrapure water - am I better off using that then anything else?
