Default 04 ezgo txt 36v. changing to 42volt ???

I was wondering if it would be worth changing my series cart to 42 volt when i upgrade my controller/ FnR switch and solenoid? I have good 6v batteries now (adout 18 months old is what i was told) and i can get a good used battery from cart shop for $50. i didn't want to take up bag well to go to 48v or drop $800 on 8v batteries . My goal is to get to 16-20 mph and haul 4 people. I also use the cart around the house for hauling stuff. would rather have a more torque than i need and only run 16 then run 20 and crawl up a small hill with 4 people or small trailer. I know i will have to upgrade motor also but i am trying to get what i can when i can. i have attached a before and after pic of cart so far

Hi Bill, Welcome to BGW. The cart lost 20% torque with the big tires and the rear seat weighs in like a passenger who never gets out. A 500 amp control will gain 40% over stock and 6v more will gain 17% so mathematically you will be up 37% - Mind you the cart will need HD F&R & a 2g cable set.

If you go to 42 volts, you can easily add a battery under the drivers side. You'll need a controller, solenoid, and charger that can do 42 volts.

You can go 48 volts by adding two 6 volt batteries . And they will fit under the seat with a little work

thanks for info how will the 500 amp controller affect the speed? will it slow it down? more amps draw for pack = lower pack voltage = slower is this right? and i was going to upgrade cables to 1/0 because I have a friend that can get me the cable and i have the crimping tool.

The motor will be happy at 36V, 42V or 48V, and the cables and F/R switch are not voltage specific, so get a controller and solenoid that will work at those voltages also.

The Alltrax SPM work at those voltages and the Super-Duty solenoid that Carts Unlimited sells does also.

That leaves the battery charger. It has to match the pack voltage.

My first upgrade was going to 2Ga cables throughout.
Next I went to an Alltrax controller and super-duty solenoid.
Then I went to 42V and bought a 42V DPI charger.
When I have to replace my batteries, I'm going to 48V and I'll have to replace the 42V output board in my DPI charger to a 48V output board, so other than battery cost, that voltage upgrade will cost me about $120.

Granted, I have a PDS cart rather than a series, but the concept is still the same.

You are right about the pack voltage dropping when amps are drawn from it and lower voltage meaning lower speed, but once the motor is spinning more than a few hundred RPM, it is incapable of drawing more amps than the stock controller will pass, so top speed is roughly the same with a stock controller or a 500A controller.

Also, the battery drain for going a certain distance is about the same. Higher speeds cause more rolling and wind resistance than going slower, but the biggest drain on batteries is having a heavy foot during acceleration.

Have you consider a D&D or Plumquick motor rebuild for more torque and speed than your stock motor. Plumquick's Bandit rebuild advertises 20% more torque and speed with a 400 amp controller. You're controller, cable, F&R upgrades etc. will work well with the motor upgrade and it costs about the same as you're new 42 volt charger.
