Default Alltrax XCT upgrade?!

I bought an Alltrax 400 a year ago for my '05 EZGO 36V. It ran wonderful for close to a year. I recently upgraded to a Plum Quick Bandit motor. I've only had the motor maybe 2 months and now my controller has burnt up. Not sure of exactly how the motor was rewound. It was supposed to be done 10% more speed and 30% more torque instead of 20% more torque and speed. Does anyone know if my motor is the reason for my controller burning up? I did upgrade the solenoid and resistor when I upgraded the controller. Now I need to either get another Alltrax 400 under warranty or either upgrade and pay the difference in price to a new Alltrax XCT. I debated on going on up to the 500 XCT. Is this worth the extra $300? The cart normally runs flawless but drags going up hills while out hunting. Will the 500 give me the extra I need? Going from the factory 275 amp to 400 amp controller was a night and day difference. Will it be almost that much better going to a 500? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Use the 400 amp control with the stock motor and the 500a control with an aftermarket hi torque motor.
The Bandit motor is a stock motor. I recommend the upgrade to the XCT control and suggest a different motor for your hunting cart.

Which motor would you suggest? So the 500 amp with Bandit motor is not a good idea?

You experience a gain in speed going from a PDS controller to a DCX400 because the DCX does not limit motor to 4,400 RPM like the stock controller does. You also gain about a 33% increase in low end torque since a DCX400 will pass 400A while a stock PDS controller will only pass 300A (stock series controllers were 275A).

With a Plum Quick motor wound for more torque, you might have noticed a difference between a DCX400 and DCX500 while accelerating from a standstill, but how much the cart slowed on hills would have been about the same, unless they were really steep hills and cart was slowing to walking speeds. This is because the motor is electrically incapable of drawing more than 400A (for a given pack voltage) above a certain RPM, so it doesn't matter if the controller can pass more amps or not.

With the optional fan kit, the XCT48400PDS can pass about 460A for a short period of the and will continuously pass about the same amps as a DCX500, so the question becomes: Below what RPM is you motor capable of drawing more than 460A at the pack voltage you are running? (A call to Plum Quick, might get you that information.)

FWIW: I went from a DCX500 to an XCT400 with no other changes and my cart's overall performance stayed pretty much the same. Of course, I don't have any low end torque issues, other than tire spin, since my tires are only 17" tall. With tall tires and a high-torque motor, you might be able to see some difference between a XCT400 and a XCT500.

I'd look at the D&D ES-76-51 I'm using, or the ES-63-49 if you want more torque.

Of course, there are other options.

Awesome, thank you for all of your help! I'm still fairly new to this. Thanks again!

Thanks so much! Gonna stick with the 400 but go to the XCT with fan

Yes- that is my recommendation. Also note the XCT has reverse polarity protection so it won't be damaged if the motor has a short as this one did.

Awesome, thanks! One more question. Can I upgrade my cart to 48V by adding the correct batteries and getting another charger? Since I've upgraded controller, solenoid, resistor? Or is there anything else I'll have to swap being a PDS cart? I was told my motor would run better/cooler with 48

Depends on which solenoid you have, the Super-Duty (400A/1000A) Scotty sells, works at 36V, 42V and 48V, but most, if not all, of the others are voltage specific.

Also, a 470Ω resistor is used with a 48V battery pack rather than a 250Ω, but the XCT doesn't use a pre-charge resistor, so that's a moot point.

Going from 36V to 48V increases both torque and speed by 33.3%, so the motor will run "better". As for "cooler", it depends on how heavy your foot is with all the newly found power.

Technically, a motor coverts watts of electrical energy into foot/pounds of mechanical torque. Since Watts = Amps X Volts, if you increase the voltage, it takes fewer Amps to produce the same number of Watts. The amount of heat generated decreases exponentially as the number of Amps through the motor decrease, so the motor does run cooler at 48V than it does at 36V when the same amount of torque is being produced.
