Changing the fluids
I have an 88 ezgo marathon cart that based on the condition it was in when I bought it I am certain the fluids have never been changed. In fact, the dipstick is not showing any oil.
I went to take off the oil pan and do a full change of fluids but I am wondering how to get that pan off, I see there is some gasket material that someone gooped on at some point, but it isnt exactly falling off. Do you have to pry it off, putty knife? Once it is off anything I should do as far as inspection/cleaning? When putting it back on will I need to create my own gasket? I found some other thread discussing what kind of fluid to replace with, does anyone know how much I will need to fill it up again if I completely drain it? Thanks in advance for all the great help, I know there are many of you who have been inside and out of these carts for years! Nice to rub shoulders with you gents. |

Re: Changing the fluids
Seeing as how this is an "every 5 years" type thing, many of you haven't bothered? How critical is it to keep fresh fluid in there?

Re: Changing the fluids
to be on the safe side......which is what I did when I bought my cart......I changed them out. One thing you can do to clean out as much as you can is first put your cart on jack stands. then fill up the differential with a VERY light oil, or even something like kerosene. then turn on the cart and run it slowly to for a short time. NOW drain the pan....and yes you will most likely need to use a putty knife to get the pan started, as there is most likely no gasket, only RTV on the pan. clean the pan.....and allow the differential to air dry for a while......then replace the pan and put new oil in the differential. you are good to go now.

Re: Changing the fluids
Thank you for the info SirNuke! I think I should do a complete flush. Do you recall how much oil was required to fill once you had emptied? I'd like to make sure I have enough on hand.

Re: Changing the fluids
How much oil? About "That much" Seriously....My brother in law did mine the last time I had it done. He "borrowed" some quality gear oil from his workplace so I really can't say....but I doubt if it was more than 2-QT. The "gasket" was created using a sealent of poly-something he applied on the lower unit when he bolted it back on, and the rear end is "full" when oil begins to run back out during the refill. (Honest....that's no joke)
I also had him install a "punkin protector" or more well known as a rear end skid plate. These are worth the $$$ if you traverse any rocky or log covered terrain. |

Re: Changing the fluids
you have a standard Dana rear differential....believe it or not, the stock amount of oil is 10 oz.

Re: Changing the fluids
I was able to get everything cleaned out and filled. Was not too hard. I first put some kerosene in there and ran the wheels for a bit, then I drained and cleaned everything. I used some RTV silicon to seal it up (about 1/4" bead all the way around) and 75-90 synthetic gear oil. When putting the cover back on I first let it sit for about 15 mins, then finger tightened the cover, let it sit for an hour, then fully tightened.
The manual pretty clearly said do not overfill with oil. So I let the dipstick be my guide, took me 14oz to get it to the proper spot on the dipstick.. Photos below. |
