Diode needed on solenoid?
Hi, new to forum and carts in general.
My son and I picked up an old EZGO last weekend in rough shape - missing batteries and wires, and a bit neglected. We cleaned it up, and I ordered parts and got a set of batteries. The serial number came back as an 1996 EZ-GO TXT, which I thought would be DCS. I got the wiring diagram from this site (Thanks!) but couldn't jibe that with what I was looking at. Did some more research, and it is pre-DCS - luckily, this site has diagrams for that, too (Thanks again!) So, we put the batteries and, and re-wired it up, and it actually works! My question is, I see from the diagram that there should be a diode across the solenoid - I do not have one. I ordered what I think is the correct part: Diode - 3.0 Amps Item#:30353G1 Is the cart safe to run or charge while I wait for it to come in? What is the purpose of it? Any other advice on raising a long-neglected cart from the dead? Thanks pf |

Re: Diode needed on solenoid?
Safe to use, but do fix it. The diode "traps" the voltage spike created by the magnetic field collapse created when power is removed from the solenoid coil (can briefly exceed 1000v). It protects the gas pedal microswitch from that spike.

Re: Diode needed on solenoid?
No, but the diode must be orientated correctly when installed. The banded end of the diode must go on the same terminal as the positive wire.
This positive wire is one half of the solenoid activation circuit. It takes 36v (+) and (-) at the 2 small terminals to create the magnet coil which draws the solenoid main contact into place. |

Re: Diode needed on solenoid?
Basically this which we send with every solenoid.
