Why are my batteries hot while charging?
I have an '06 EZ Go. One of my battery cables broke so I replaced them all. They are wired correctly when compared to the diagram, plus I replaced them one at a time as I removed an old one just so I wouldn't screw up. I did not replace any of the wires leading from the first or last battery in the series and leading to the charger and starter.
I noticed after about 1 week that the batteries are hot while charging. Hot to the point where it can be smelled when I walk into the garage. Also, the first battery (positive to charger) sounds as if it is boiling while charging. All batteries are full of water. Though not distilled. The cart seems to run fine. I am worried about the heat and boiling sound. Any ideas. I know next to nothing about these things. First post and this is a great site. I look forward to reading and participating. |

Re: Why are my batteries hot while charging?
What you are smelling is hydrogen gas and is normal...some produce more than others. Batteries boiling is normal. What isn't normal is using tap water to fill lead acid batteries. Batteries filled with tap water will have a decreased lifespan.
If a charger is used that has a higher voltage than what is supposed to be used they will boil too. A battery ran in parrallel will cause the pack to produce less voltage and boil the batteries...... |

Re: Why are my batteries hot while charging?
Thanks. Yeah, I know distilled water is the way to go. I've got some now that I found that out. I plan on using it from now on.
Why are they hotter and smellier than before? Any Ideas. I never noticed either before the cable change. |

Re: Why are my batteries hot while charging?
Can't really answer that, it could be because they are new, it could be from the tap water minerals, over charging...someone knows....just never heard or read exactly why.

Is it taking longer to charge than before the cable change? Check to insure a tight connection at all cable ends and charger connections......

Re: Why are my batteries hot while charging?
I haven't noticed it taking longer to charge. I usually play a round of golf and plug it in overnight. The cart typically stays plugged in when not in use. I don't think teh charger will over charge. I believe it is supposed to stop charging when the batteries are fully charged. It does fully charge the cart as indicated by on board charge meter.
I'll check all of the connections. Kinda wierd though. I've had the cart for two years with no problem except for one other broken cable. Changed it with no problem. I change all of the cables and I notice a smell and significant heat from the abtteries while charging. Maybe I'm paranoid because I pretty much screw everything like this up. No mechanical aptitude whatsoever. Should I be concerned? It is not so hot that I think it is going to melt anything. It's just hotter and smellier than I noticed before. Could it be a different cable? I used cables for lawn equipment. They appear to be the same guage as the old. Thanks guys. |

Re: Why are my batteries hot while charging?
Problem solved. Crappy cables. Replaced with new ez go cart cables and voila. No more excessive heat. Lesson learned. Thanks guys.
I'll post some pics of my cart soon. Dark blue ez go w/ woody package and blue/tan two tone seats front and rear. I am the Al Czervik (think Caddyshack) of my neighborhood golf course. |
