resistor coils vs controller

so im curious.. i read alot about people upgrading their controllers to get more speed and torque... but rarely do u hear anything about a resistor cart upgrades.. by having a resistor cart am i limited to how much i can do to it as far as upgrades go?? I know i can do a 48v conversion bigger wires and possibly an upgraded motor but is that as much as i can do to gain speed and torque??

You are somewhat limited but, you can run it on 48v for an increase in torque and speed...there are some drawbacks but, it has been fun for my 89CC ... never burned up a coil as some will warn....but now it is in process of a controller conversion

what about running two resistor coils one in parrallel with the other??would that help at all??

how involved is a controller conversion??

I don't know if that would work, not sure it has even been tried ?
It involves $ and time

Use the site search type in 48v conversion, or 36v to 48v conversion ,or upgrade, or controller conversion.....and you will find plenty to read on this topic...Good Luck

There may be a couple of options other than a controller conversion that you could also consider.

Don't know what motor you have, but for some earlier models you may still be able to find a field coil upgrade to IIRC 3.5hp.

You'll have to search but I think there might be still available a "high-performance" set of resistor coils that are able to handle higher voltages. I think these coils are flat not round.

For the cost of the above though you're getting close to converting to ESC but..... most will say sell the resistor cart and get a newer cart already setup for ESC since even after upgrading the electrics you still have a 20+ year old cart and bolt on bling is pretty much not available for that era cart.

sleezego, the thing you want to remember is that on ANY resisitor cart the resistors are only inline when you are at anything less than wide open throttle. The resistors are what regulates the speed of the cart. At WOT, the resistors are out of the circuit. At this point it as a matter of battery power, motor power, and cable/connection efficiency.

The answer is no. Simple as that, WOT is WOT no matter how you get there.
What controller don't do is waste amperage burning it off with resistor coils. With resistors you draw full power everty time you step on the peddle. The resistors burn off the amps not used, so to speak. A controller only draws as much as you ask for.....resulting in a more efficient system = longer run times.
