Default Electric golf cart caught on fire!

Soooooooooooo, here's the situation: My son accidentally crossed (he thinks) some wires that lead to the controller. He said when he put it in "go", the thing caught fire. Now I don't know what to do. The controller is burnt up, and I'm scared for him to work on it anymore. Should I trade it in on a gas one? Should I just take it to a golf cart repair place and brace myself for what could be a very expensive repair bill? I know the converted controllers for a 48V cart are expensive. Do you all think I should even waste my time trying to repair this one? I paid $2400 for it, and have sunk a lot of money in wiring, batteries, etc. already. Sooooooooooooo frustrated! They would have to come pick it up and probably order the controller, install, etc. What do you think I'm looking at dollar wise? Should I order a new controller and try to install it? Now, I'm worried that it's too dangerous for my 16 yr. old son to work on.

What year is the cart? I guess 48 volts? If you are not comfortable working on it I would take it to a shop for an estimate. Depends on what all was damaged but I guess a minimum bill in the $500 range if the controller is burnt

Similar thing happened to me a few months ago. http://www.buggiesgonewild.com/elect...ught-fire.html My cart was insured, and considered a total loss. They paid me $4,300 out of the $4,500 I had in it.

Any chance it was insured? If it happened at home, sometimes your homeowners will cover it. But might not be worth it due to deductibles or your homeowners rates increasing.

Did anything else burn up? If not, I would replace the controller.
Good Luck!

Golf carts are so little and cute. It's easy for somebody unqualified to judge themselves capable of working on them. Truth is these forum pages are filled with threads by people who are in over their heads, some with no concept of positive and negative polarity. Most all of them succeed with a little help from forum members.
Your son has learned a very important lesson if he can learn what he did wrong. And if you can afford to have him learning on your cart it will expand his mechanical and electrical horizons. But personally I would be right there watching every move.... and helping.

Post some pics of the damage - lets see how bad it really is

First job when working with any vehicle with DC power, car, cart, truck, motorcycle whatever. Disconnect the primary ground/negative. If you can teach him to do that, you will save yourself a lot of headaches and money.

Ive been working on car alarms, radios, and wiring cars since 98. We just started working on golf carts at my shop for about 4 years. I'm not saying he cant work on it, or under stand whats going on in there, but u might want to leave him to the exterior part of the cart. I totally agree with chloe to teach him remove the ground and power off the battery before service, but there's a lot more to it. Teach him how to read a volt meter, about ohms, about resistance, about diodes, show him wire diagrams and get him to read them to you.

We have had unexperienced shop workers that have done nightmares to these carts. One guy wired up a controller wrong, and put the batteries straight to the motor. Then put it in gear. The cart ran across the parking lot and hit the cleaning lady's van. About 2 grand in damage.

I would suggest gas for your son. Every thing is 12v. More mechanical knowledge than wire knowledge. Unless he's smoking near the gas tank he shouldn't have a fire. Beware them gas motors and rear ends get pricey. u might b at 500$ now in repairs. blow a gas engine and your looking at 1,500 to start for repairs. Hope this helps

you got to start somewhere ... do not let him feel bad about it .. work together and use it as a teaching tool ... scottyb has controllers at a fair price

That's how I learned, by screwing things up! Knowledge comes at a price, but he won't forget it! Don't let him give up, just maybe get him someone with a little more knowledge to help him.
