Default hot plug braking

Reading through the controller manual, there is a section for hot plug braking. An optional feature that is enabled is activated by shitfing from fwd to reverse, while keeping the pedal to the floor....
I have feathered reverse before, in times of brake failure, but never thought to floor it first..
Wonder what vehicles that was used in,anyone use this feature?..
What happens if the controller doesnt have this setup

The Controller would have to have the optional A2 terminal as it is only used for plug brake.

If it is used, it is imperative that A2 goes to motor A2 and M- goes to motor A1.

There is an internal diode between A2 and M- that will basically short the armature (plug brake) when it is spinning against the current Stator polarity.

True. The controller would need to know the FNR direction. I think the direction selection is after the controller.

The FNR position is not important, plug brake will work on Forward or Reverse, the important part is that the cables are connected as I mentioned, the rest happens automatically when the motor Armature is forcibly rotated against the polarity of the Field coil.

Without the A2 connection (as described by Sergio), when the F/R is shifted to the direction opposite to the way the cart is traveling, the motor locks up until the cart's momentum is no longer trying to keep it spinning in the original direction and then it starts spinning in the opposite direction. Essentially, the cart slides to a stop, trying its best to impale the driver on the steering column and/or strip the splines in the hubs and/or break axles and/or shear teeth off gears.

When A2 is connected, if the direction is changed while moving, the motor is converted into a generator and the cart's momentum continues to spin it in the same direction, converting the cart's momentum into electrical energy, until it slows to a stop and then it reverses direction. The amount of "Plug Brake" current allowed by controller determines how rapidly the cart stops.

Electric forklift operators use plug braking and the controllers used in forklifts were also used in golf carts, so some series carts have plug braking while others don't.

Ghee.....that seems to be a tad different than the "impale" method. OTOH, the "impale" method would far more entertaining to watch....as long as serious injury or death wasn't involved. Or children.

Ohhh OK, quite familiar with the impale method.Brake pad seperated from the shoe. Approaching a Stop sign at full speed..learned quickly just how little throttle is needed to stop..
Reverse to fwd is not to impressive on these stock carts, maybe in a warehouse with slick tires...
