power wise charger and small generator
what would happen if the power wise 21 amp charger was plugged into a small 900 watt generator?
would it damage the charger? would it choke down the generator. or would it work but take a long time to charge? I ask because I have a harbour freight 900watt generator and wondered about being able to use it in a pinch, without damage! |

Re: power wise charger and small generator
Your generator is Rated for 7.5 amps, it will peak a little higher but is not properly rated for charger. Would probably not be good for charger or generator. Maybe some one with more knowledge of the charger's load and internal component's might be able to help.

Re: power wise charger and small generator
Chances are that 900 watt generator is not quite that much and I would guess that is a peak wattage. Running watts is probably close to 600 which would be close. I don't think it would be good for either.

If it were mine I would hook it up and try it out with a short running test. Better to know it wont work now than depend on it later. Probably wouldn't hurt the charger in any event. Ratings are close enough to possibly work.

At best this generator would be marginal running a charger. You need excess capacity in a generator for it to work properly. You can try it but it may not handle the transient when the charger kicks on.

Re: power wise charger and small generator
HF has it rated at 900W but I have heard it's not even close to that.Several people had these little two cycle gennys but they were too noisey to run in campgrounds. One of them said the best his would put out was 6.5 amps and it wasn't regulated power or sine wave power or something.

Re: power wise charger and small generator
900w = 7.5a @ 120v. That is not nearly enough for the full load of the charger when it first kicks on. It should trip the breaker on the generator as soon as the charger kicks on.

Re: power wise charger and small generator
well, I was pretty sure it wouldn’t work but I didn't want to damage anything testing.
