On Board Charger
I am looking into swapping my cart to 48 volt. This means I'll need a new charger. I've been doing some looking at chargers and I really like the idea of an on board charger. I believe it will be a lot more convenient. My question is, do they charge as good and care for the batteries like a conventional cart charger? Anyone have any reviews? The ones I have looked at are from the Quick Charge Corporation.

Re: On Board Charger
We have found that exposure to constant vibration, excess heat, & water does shorten the useful life of any charger when mounted on the golf cart.
My experience with on board chargers is that they are not as good as a stand alone charger like the DPI Accusense with 5 stage charging and maintenance float mode. So while on board chargers look like a good idea on paper, in reality they come with a higher price (shorter life) and compromised battery care which can lead to premature battery failure. The only one I can recommend is made by Lester and cost nearly double what a good DPI stand alone charger costs. |

Re: On Board Charger
I had an OLD quick charge 36v onboard charger on my cart for before I converted it to 48v and it worked great. Now I have a DeltaQ QuiQ 48v onboard charger that was from a Polaris ranger. Works great. The Quick Charge charger is built like a tank, the DeltaQ is not a robustly built.

Re: On Board Charger
I would recommend against an onboard charger for all of the above reasons. The cart environment is much more hostile than your garage environment.

Re: On Board Charger
I've had a Quick Charge for a while now - besides the digital display starting to go - the thing is great. Bombproof for sure - I beat the cart up and use it often - and after 3 years plus the thing still puts on a perfect charge and float.
Convenience is the best - I take the cart to the course, about 4 miles, play 18 and plug in at lunch. I've also been stranded with dead batteries and was able to simply find a close outlet and plug in - I had a retractable 25 foot cord coming from the old charger port for a bit but it stopped working - I carry an extension cord now IMO totally worth the expense |
