Frame is getting power
So I'm installing some led lights and I'm testing for power. I've got my neg connected to a battery, I'm putting down my tester and it touches a bare metal spot on the frame and it lights up. What the hell? I guess I've got a hot shorting to the frame? Where would I begin to look? Does this explain why I was getting 24v to the headlights?

Re: Frame is getting power
Make sure none of the grounds are attached to the frame. Start on the accessory side if anything has been added since it was new. DIY guys have a tendency to hook grounds to the frame rather than the battery posts.

Re: Frame is getting power
Often this is caused by acid leakage. It's conductive and it can create a high resistance path to ground. Look for that and also look for anything that is connected to the chassis that should not be.

might check all your large power cables to see if a spot has rubbed through on the frame.

Re: Frame is getting power
Frame ghost voltage Is what it usually is. Take a 12 volt light and connect it to the pos on the battery, and use the frame for the ground, see if it will light up. It will probably not light up. Not enough volts or amps. Clean the batteries real good with banking soda and water. And. A lot of dust from the brushes in the motor can cause this to

It is good to eliminate this as much as possible by cleaning.

Re: Frame is getting power
Like every one has said case leakage from dirty batteries, worn wires and carbon from motor brushes can cause the ghost voltage. On an old cart, it can be all of them at the same time.
Depending on where you live the humidity level can cause the above problems to be worse. |
