Default How can this work??

A guy brought a cart in last week. Stock 36v. 2003 EZGO series. OEM everything, except batteries. He had 5 (five) 8volt Trojans. Said he had been running like that for over a year. His problem turned out to be the reed switch. Runs great now. Has anyone ever heard of this before?

Well a 36 volt cart pack is close to 44 volt when coming off the charger so a 36 volt system will allow the higher voltage to a point but how was he charging it ?

It had the standard powerwise receptacle. He did not bring his charger.

Is common to upgrade a 36v to 42v (adding a 6v battery) or 48v (changing the 6v batts to 8v). There are al lot of threads about that here and they do use the same stock motor, but you need to change the controller, solenoid and CHARGER.

In your case it looks like they went with 5 8v batts which puts you in 40v. It is strange probably some vets here like JohnnieB or ScottieB can pitch in on how rare this is. First time I see it, but I'm a noob .

The problem you will have to to charge those batteries, the standard 36v charger will not have enough to charge your 40v full pack and will eventually shorten the batteries life. That is probably why he did not have a charger

Is the controller and solenoid stock?

I think your best bet there is to add another 8v battery and fully convert it to 48v and get a 48v charger (plus solenoid and controller). But don't take my work for it and see if someone that knows more pitch in.

Cart ran like a spotted a**ed ape after we bypassed reed switch. He's been running over a year with this set-up so he obviously has been charging. He has a charger, just didn't bring it with the cart. He was retired from T.I. and told me manufacturers of solid state stuff say "you can't do this or that" but you actually can. I was just curious if anybody here had run into this before.

If he somehow got a charger that is designed for 40 volts, then all is probably ok. If he's using a 36V charger, he is undercharging. If he's using a 48V charger, he is overcharging.

Only checked pack voltage: 42.6. They were all C14 Trojans. 8volt.
I don't know what SG is.

So 42.6v total pack now, from the SOC chart attached; 5 x 8v Tojans should give you 42.45 at 100% charge.

It looks like is charged over 100% (or they have some surface charge)
Since you do not have a charger and you said you used the GC I will go on a limb and say that the batteries were overcharged, probably with a 48v (or 42v??) charger.

Check each battery voltage against the SOC chart.

The cart is gone. Fixed it while it was on the trailer. If he comes back in I will investigate further, but for now, I'm racking my brain trying to figger out how this could work. Talked to a guy @ EZGO and he laughed and said.... "if it aint broke, don't try to fix it.
