Default First ride up in smoke

Just purchased my first cart 02 TXT. All checked out good on test drive. Got it home and within 10-15 minutes of the first ride started smelling a burnt plastic. Got it to a friends house and opened the seat to find smoke coming out of a unit. The cables coming off the unit seemed to be warm, so those are getting upgraded. Not sure what part this is called but doing a brief search makes it seem like I need to new controller. Any help is appreciated.

well looking at the picture.....the picture is the back side of the F&R switch....and the black thing we are looking at is the back-up buzzer. is that were the smoke is coming from?

and also.....from the picture what you have is a 02 TXT Series cart.

Smoke appeared to be coming from where the 6ga cables connect to it. There's a total of 4 and from there it goes to the motor.

Well that is in fact the F&R switch. not sure why it would be smoking, but obviously you are experiencing a HIGH CURRENT condition (HEAT) for one reason or another. It could be that the switch contacts are wore out, or even loose. To tighten then up, on the back side of the switch, in the center of where the cables attach, there is a 9/16" nut that is the center shaft for the switch, tighten it down until it bottoms out, then back it off 1/2 turn.

Bad connections cause excessive heat. You will need to replace it and make sure all of your connections are clean and tight.

Smoke is burning plastic switch housing. Replace it with the best HD unit you can find - NOT the cheapest you can find or you will be buying it again and again

i have the same cart as you and after my cart fried the f/r switch i knew an upgrade was in order....(THE PAST GUY HAD CHEEPED OUT ON QUALITY AND I PUT THIS CART THROUGH TO MUCH ACCEPT THAT LACK OF RELIABILITY)

i have scotty b`s H/D solenoid,f/r switch and i made my own 2g cable set out of welding cable. i dont recommend doing that. my buddy got his own 2g set from scotty-they are beautiful and superior to my work by far....

in 2 years i have had perfect reliability and i run this cart to death-scotty b cant be beat for quality, service and advice and price for product delivered.

Thanks for the replies, I will be definitely ordering the HD unit from ScottyB. Does the HD unit have everything i would need, aside from cables? I will be replacing all my cables with 0ga. wire. Have a good but left over from my car audio days.

Looking at the HD and SD kits available it either 0-500 amps or 500+. I am currently stock controller but will be upgrading to a 500amp. That being said would a SD kit work on my stock controller until I upgrade? Don't like to "max out" a part's capability thus would like the SD kit.

Yes, The SD will work with a stock controller now and a 500 amp control later. You can also get the 36v now and run it in a 48v system later, No Problem
