Before I spend the $$...am i making the right choice.
So Im rebuilding my 05 ezgo from the ground up. I had decided on a 5 inch lift, 23x10.5x12 tires and 12x7 wheels. I was going to upgrade my controller and motor in the future as well as possibly convert to 42 or 48 volts.
I am planning on ordering the tires, wheels and lift today however, am I making the right choice? Ill be doing mostly street trails etc but using it at our hunting land as well. Top speed wont be an issue but will torque? On one hand I like the additional clearance and look to the 23" tires but should I go slightly smaller to get the most out of a different controller / motor setup or can I get what I'm looking for with the 23"'s? I guess the overall outcome is a cart that's lifted, can get where I need to go off-road and wont slow down on road going up mild hills. I would think a good solid 20+ mph would be adequate if I had plenty of torque to endure what off-road terrain brings. Any suggestions? ** and then in the back of my mind there's the issue of a high torque setup, 23 inch tires...and snapping axles! |

Re: Before I spend the $$...am i making the right choice.
is it a series cart-they offer a lot more torque....
over 20" tire will impact your torque significantly- jonnie b is good at % of loss due to gearing change ect...search up torque threads and you can find a lot of helpful info.... |

I'd say you have an open book.. Series will get you more torque but can suffer in the speed department. Sepex will get you the speed but you will have to figure how much torque do you need. You said 23 inch tires but what about rear seat and how much weight to do want to carry ?

Re: Before I spend the $$...am i making the right choice.
With 23" tall tires you'll lose about 22% of the available torque throughout the motor's RPM spectrum.
If the tires are the low pressure type (<10 PSI max inflation pressure), you'll lose a bit more. A wide tread width will also lose an additional bit of torque. If you try to run 23" tires with a stock controller, upgrading the controller will very likely occur in the near future. |

I will probably have a rear seat. Any recommendations on motor / controller combos for what I'm looking for and what voltage? Should I plan on 42 or 48 over the 36?

I'm in the middle of a similar project right now.....spent my money on converting to a new 48 volt pack of Trojan 890's, Alltrax SPM-500 controller, HD solenoid, SD reversing contactor, and new 2ga cables (all from ScottyB). Sticking with stock motor for now. I figure I'll make it run right first, then add all the silly wheel/tire/lift kit stuff later on. It's pretty **** easy to get $2K deep into a project without even touching the asthetics end of the puzzle.

Hmm, is it possible to replace my controller, and run 48v on my stock motor till I'm ready to upgrade it?

What is the existing drive type, Series or SepEx? Going to 42V or 48V will give you better speed and torque with either drive type. Basically, you have to define the end goal for the cart first, then select components to reach that goal. |
