Default How do you know when your batteries are unsalvageable?

Went over to a friends today. They have a 2011 EZGO TXT 48v with eight 8v batteries. They mistakenly left the charger off all winter and there wasn't enough voltage to trip the charger.

I brought my battery charger over there and checked everything before starting. The series read 1.7-2 volts total. Each battery read less than 1 volt if anything at all.

I put my charger on two batts at a time at the suggestion of past threads, and was able to get two pairs up to about 9volts.

One of the pairs wouldn't even register on the charger.

I told them to watch the cables and batteries to make sure they didn't get warm, and to check them every 10 minutes.

I'm hoping we can get enough voltage to trip the cart charger to finish the job.

Water was good in all the batteries and they hadn't dried out.

How do you know if they need to be replaced, and how salvageable are they at this point?

They need to be replaced. Your description is good enough. The only use for them is core charge credit on replacements.

If they sat in a discharged state (below 50% SOC) for any amount of time, the plates are likely sulfated and the batteries are shot. Hard way to learn that lesson.

I'll need to go check on a neighbors cart when I get off ship. While I was home last he came asking for help as his old DS would not charge or do anything. Turns out it had been sitting over the winter with no charge. On inspection I find his batteries are all but dry and holding almost no voltage at all. It took nearly 5 gallons of water to refill 6 very old and neglected batteries. Perked them all up with my 12 volt charger enough to get the CC charger to take off on its own. Several hours later the charger has least tapered off on the amps. I'm sure that the batteries are shot but as it never even leaves their yard I'm curious to see how they are holding out....

Severely sulphated batteries won't take a charge. If they take a charge, there is a chance they can get some use out of them but the performance will stink. It's always worth a shot to charge them aggressively and see what happens.

Checked a battery pack the other day for someone. 1.7 volts on the entire pack and couple of the individuals had negative voltage.. Yep they are cores.. Like you said very hard and expensive lesson..

Yep we laughed about the very same thing! While I'm no where near the only person in the HOA with an Electric Cart I am the only person who actually gets out and "rides" around and can be found miles from the house with one or more of our critteres and with a cold one or two.... Most never leave their own little circle.

Just for kicks... How do you connect three batteries to two battery chargers?
