Default RXV shuts down going down hill

I have a 2013 RXV that is new to me (couple days old). It has new Crown batteries. It is also lifted with 24" tires, freedom mode is not enabled (currently top end is 16 MPH).

As the title says it is stopping when going down long medium grade hills on roads in my neighborhood. It is not braking hard, it is acting like I completely let off the accelerator. Whether I keep the pedal floored or let off it completely it slows the same and when it stops completely I hear the mechanical brake click on. If I let up on the pedal completely while it is slowing and push the pedal again it will take off again without stopping completely. It will also take right back off if it stops all the way, the key is I have to completely lift off the accelerator and then re-engage it. On a long hill it will keep shutting down until I reach a flat road or and incline. On short hills it will not happen even though they may be steeper.

The fact that it only does it on long down hills makes me think something is overheating or overloading with the regenerative braking, but I am new to the RXV and it is just a guess. Again it seems to run perfectly on flat ground and climbs inclines like a champ with no issues.

Any input or advice would be appreciated!

Does it ever do it on flat surfaces? Also a 2013 should still be under warranty...I think.. All I know is that I have an RXV and they are $$EXPENSIVE$$ to work on since everything is computerized! Do you smell anything burning or melting like plastic when it happens?

It does not do it on flat surfaces, only going down hill. I do not smell anything out of the ordinary.

According to EZGO the warranty on the RXV is non-transferable and I am not the original owner.

Default Re: RXV Auto-Brake Problem III

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Back at my northern course, we are having problems with the Flowrite autofills (11 out of 60 serviced this week) and a few carts dying on the course.

I have not determined that the latter is because of battery problems as this year's staff is not very diligent, and does not check to make sure carts are plugged in before they leave at night, or first thing in the morning. The mornings I open there are always some carts not plugged in.

While playing golf the other day, the cart I was in died after just 7 holes, and another one was brought out to us. Then, there was no note made of which one died.

It may seem like golf course work is simple, and the pay is minimum, making it hard to attract responsible workers, but there is some danger to it and workers have to be trained, diligent, and there has to some discipline. JMHO.

We are continuing to have problems with a couple of other quirks of the 2012 RXV.

First, when operating a cart downhill, especially if there is a bump or two, some of the brake pedals slide forward enough on their own to brake the cart. Of course, a customer has no idea what the problem is so their report is that the cart keeps dying. I/we know to lift up on the brake pedal with the top of our left foot while continuing to operate the accelerator with our right foot, not exactly how the cart was designed to be operated.
Secondly, the brake pedal does not work at all on some carts at low speed, such as in parking the cart. That problem is more pronounced to me after six months of working with Club Cars that stop when braked, at any speed. I can see this quirk leading to some injuries, damaged calfs and shins for instance.

This is from a 2013 post by cartboy. Might help.

Thanks for the suggestions! I have checked the brake pedal and the spring is strong holding it up, it doesn't seem to move at all and I tried holding it up with my left foot. Cart still responding the same.

Thanks again though!

Is there a point at which you can overload the regenerative breaking while going down a long hill?

This could be possible, if the batteries were fully charged and just unplugged from the charger, but your issue doesnt sound like that to me. I would check the 4-wire encoder plug on the top of the motor, just behind the batteries. Unplug & replug it, then try it again.

I unplugged and replugged encoder plug. Still having the issue. Last night after a long trip cart did the same thing, acted as if accelerator was completely lifted going down hill several times in a row. Cart then would start to move and immediately stop. If I turned off key and waited a minute it would move again. Here is the odd part, when it was doing this on even slight down hills it would move 20 feet and stop again. On any sort of grade up it would run strong and keep going until it encountered a flat spot or down hill at which time it would stop.

Each time I would wait a minute or two and it would start again. I was about 1.5 miles from home and finally got it home. After 10 minutes in the driveway I got in and it ran as normal.

I smell nothing hot, felt nothing extraordinarily hot under the seat. But it seems to need to rest so I am assuming something is getting hot or over worked. It just seems so odd that it runs UP hills, even long steep hills like champ even when it is 'faulting'.

Anyone have any ideas? Thanks for any help in advance!!

You may need to get a handheld and see if it's showing any error codes.

This would be what the bleeder resistor is for. If it is the Curtis version it checks the voltage on the KSI and if it is over the (adjustable) threshold it will turn on the 'RES' post driver to bleed off the excess regen power. The default on this is about 67V. This condition would result from freewheeling down hill with a freshly charged battery pack. There is also a thermal shutoff tied into this. If that resistor gets too hot the bi-metal switch on the heatsink will open the main solenoid.

The Danaher version does something similar too but I'm not as informed about the details.
