Disconnect before repair?
So I didn't see a Sticky thread on what needs to be disconnected before sticking your hands down into the battery compartment for repairs. I realize this is probably a very silly question but I want to be sure I do not shock myself or destroy some component on my golf cart. What do I need to be concerned about before working on my cart?
Thank you in advance! |

Re: Disconnect before repair?
If your cart is equipped with a run/tow switch the switch should be put in tow (maintenance) mode before any electrical work is done. This includes battery top cleaning.

Re: Disconnect before repair?
If you are working on anything with tools, disconnect a cable. There is a shock hazard but not a major one. The real reason is that the battery has the potential to put out huge currents if you short something with a tool. That is very damaging and dangerous.

Re: Disconnect before repair?
The interesting thing is that for CC the manufacture continued to produce resistor coil carts for 10 years after the introduction of SS drive because of lower production costs. This lower cost could then be passed onto the golf courses in terms of lower lease costs. These lease carts eventually trickled down to the private sector, which is why we have so many 36v resistor coil carts built after the solid state introduction.

Re: Disconnect before repair?
There is a benifit to resistor carts. If there's a nuke blast nearby that causes a EMP, all the controller carts will not work. You should have the course all to yourself.

Re: Disconnect before repair?
I've got a 88 western golf an country, which is about what you have except the body. It was converted before I bought it, at 36 v it would do about 12 mph, the controller can run at 36v 42 or 48 v I'm running it at 42 but haven't checked the speed I know it is probably running about 15 mph or so. If it had the txt or marathon body the speed would probably be a couple of mph faster as the western is fiberglass and a lot heavier
