Brake cables on lifted cart

This subject has come up a few times on here. I did some work on the cart today and thought I would share it with you guys.

The problem- after you raise the cart, the brake cables are hanging low to catch on sticks and stuff. Also, in some cases one of the cables will not reach or be uncomfortable tight. Here you can see the cables hanging down.

In another thread on this site, some guy told me you can just spin the brake plates around and run the cable to the top solving the problem. When I tried this, it didn't work because then the cable is coming in from the back of the cart. After looking at it a bit, I realized you can swap the plates side to side and then spin them around.

Now the cables come in from the front, but the actuator arm is right against the lift block. Also the cable bracket is tucked behind the lift block.

So I figured I would do some modifying. I removed the lift block and cut it off center.

Then I flip it over and welded it back on.

Installed in the cart, you can see the clearance the modification allowed.

All in all, it turned out really good. I was able to put the cables back in the clamps on the frame. Now the cables are up, out of the way.

I only got done with this today and have done some running around. The brakes work great. Although I fixed an addition problem on the brakes. I think this mod will not really have any effect on the brakes. I want to say that I have very little testing on it. If you choose to do this, I want to say it's at your own risk. But it would appear to be trouble free. If some comes up, I will report it on this thread.

Zip ties are a lot easier and cheaper

Sorry I missed your post. You can't use zip tyes because the cables arnt long enough if you type them tight to the frame. Also you can't bend the cable close to the brake plate.

I use zip ties on mine. You just don't pull them tight

Stupid question here, but since it is only me second post here goes. Doesn't anyone make longer brake cables? I'd like to lift my txt but not if I have to mess with the brakes, I'm not that "advanced" yet. ��

I have mine lifted and don't have a problem.

I do think my passenger side is applying more pressure. And may be dragging. I will dig into it. I am not sure if it's from the lift or another issue yet.

I am pretty sure they make like 6" extentions that I beleive just screw on or something .

You don't really "have to" do anything. In the first pic, my cart worked fine. As I said, I just didn't like the low hanging cables. One of them was kind of tight, but it worked.

Depending on your lift kit, you might be able to flip your brake plates without cutting and welding the lift block. That doesn't take much in the way of "advanced mechanics".
