Key switch relay success
I was able to build a successful relay to turn off my 12v converter from the key switch while maintaining neutral safety.
The addition of this relay allows for all 12v accessories to be shut off with the key. I added a radio, well an amplifier with a 3.5 mm input, to my cart last weekend and it has a light that would stay on all the time unless I flipped the switch. I figured that it would be a matter of time before I didnt turn off the amp and would not plug in the cart and then the batteries would be dead and so forth and so on. The best solution to me was to have it switch with the key. Of course having it switch with the key was a problem as it was pointed out that there was no factory inclusion of any easy way to switch 12v. A standard relay installation would cause lights or radio or what ever to all shut down when moving from forward to reverse. To fix that I built a time delay power off relay. It runs off of the green wire/switched 48v at the key and a second power connection to the battery pack. The delay to shut off is about 10 seconds which is more than enough time to switch from forward to reverse or vise versa. Its also kind of cool to see the lights shut off on there own after tuning off the cart and walking away. The connections are: Green wire to time delay circuit Positive. Ground of circuit to 1st battery Negative. Output from circuit to Negative of relay. Positive from first battery to Positive of relay. Circuit is + > Diode > Capacitor+ (Neg to ground) > 4.7k resistor > Base of Transistor (2N3904),Emitter of Transistor to Ground, Collector of Transistor to Relay. Install diode across relay in proper alignment from Neg to Pos. Currently its still on a breadboard but tested and works. I am using a DC DC SSR but I believe that I am going to try a Buck converter to step down 16v to 12v and go with a standard Bosch style relay that doesn't get so HOT. The SSR without a heat sink gets hot enough to burn you just running the lights. I post some pics later but its bed time. |

Re: Key switch relay success
Sounds like you got it working good. I just installed a "unique key" switch. It has a seperate circuit for lights, radio or whatever. The lights work on the first click. The cart works on the second click. The two circuits never connect to each other, so you can run two different voltages. It seems like it would be easier than what you did. But the delay lights is kind of cool.

Re: Key switch relay success
I would be easier, mostly. My cart would have required new wires being run from the 12v regulator up to the dash. Not a big deal though.
